Newmarket Tips: Saturday 16 May 2026
Good ground at Headquarters on a Saturday afternoon. Three featured races on the card, a mix of juvenile fillies on debut, a straightforward novice stakes with a class act from Godolphin, and a 13-runner turf handicap over seven furlongs where the market will tell a story. Newmarket always rewards horses who get into a rhythm and travel comfortably, and on good going the bias tends to favour horses with a clean, balanced action rather than big, galloping types.

Seven debutantes, all unknown quantities, so pedigree and trainer form become the primary tools. Kevin Philippart De Foy’s operation has made a sharp start with juveniles this year, and Ambience at 3/1 with BoyleSports carries serious blue-chip breeding at 850,000gns. A Frankel filly out of a Listed-winning dam, half-sister to Beat The Bank and Chil Chil, this is a family that goes. The tongue-tie on debut is slightly unusual but De Foy clearly knows something about readying this filly.
The bigger appeal, though, is Jolivette at 5/2 with BoyleSports and Betfred. Andrew Balding’s yard is firing at a formidable 13 winners from 80 runners over the past fortnight, and this Wootton Bassett filly is a half-sister to Jonquil, who won on debut for these exact same connections at a similar trip. The dam was a Listed-placed six-furlong winner at two, so the precocity is clearly there. Balding knows this filly is ready, and the market is likely to reflect that. At 5/2 she represents the value play in a field where most are unknown.
Selection: Jolivette (5/2, BoyleSports/Betfred)

A five-runner race in practice after Superior Choice was scratched, and the Appleby pair dominate the market. Shabab Al Ahli is odds-on at 4/7 across the board and it is not hard to see why. He won cosily on his debut at Southwell before stepping up in class at Newbury, where he finished a one-length fourth in a race that has worked out extremely well since. The step up to a mile and four furlongs is the key angle here: he is bred to relish this extra stamina test, and Charlie Appleby rarely sends a short-priced horse to Newmarket without grounds for confidence.
The main danger is Turty Tree at 7/2 with BoyleSports and Betfred, trained by Andrew Balding (who, as noted, has the yard humming right now). He ran here at two, handled good ground fine, and has been placed on both starts this season. He needs a career-best to turn over the favourite, but if Shabab Al Ahli is below peak he is the most likely beneficiary.
The favourite is the play. Not spectacular value, but this is a race to play straight.
Selection: Shabab Al Ahli (4/7, BoyleSports/Betfred/LiveScore Bet)

Now here is where the afternoon gets interesting. Thirteen runners over seven furlongs on good ground, and the form book is full of legitimate angles.
Shah Each-Way at 8/1 with BoyleSports and Betfred is the selection. This four-year-old gelding was placed in his first three starts as a juvenile, all on going ranging from good to firm down to good to soft, before easily making all to win a novice over this exact trip on the all-weather. He has been absent since, with both a gelding operation and wind surgery completed in the interim. That combination of breathing and physical improvements on a horse with a clean handicap mark of 102, entered off a long layoff, is the profile of something the market can underestimate. George Boughey’s yard has been ticking over at four from 26 runners recently, so the horses are not running cold. The note from the form analysis is explicit: the betting will be interesting. Keep a close eye on the market in the hour before the off. If this one moves from 8/1 toward 5/1, take the price immediately.
Dark Tornado is the each-way saver at 25/1. He won this exact race last year on good to firm ground, the going is similar today, and the wind surgery during his absence mirrors what Shah has undergone. He is a massive price for a course-and-distance winner and deserves a small each-way interest.
Silver Ghost at 11/2 is the most likely market leader and the obvious danger. Two wins last May, including over this course and distance on good ground, and she reappeared with a solid third over the same course a fortnight ago. She is in good shape and the booking of Finley Marsh as opposed to a more senior jockey is the only mild hesitation. She is fair market value at those odds but does not offer the upside that Shah does.
Selection: Shah (8/1, BoyleSports/Betfred) Each-Way

A four-year-old with unfinished business. Three placed runs as a juvenile suggested plenty of ability, and he followed up by winning cosily over this exact trip on the all-weather. Wind surgery and a gelding operation during a lengthy absence are the sort of physical improvements that can unlock a horse, and George Boughey’s yard is in decent nick. Opening handicap mark of 102 is workable, good ground suits his profile, and 8/1 in a 13-runner handicap at Newmarket is the kind of price you need to be on the right side of when the market wakes up.
