Newmarket Tips: Friday 10 July 2026

A cracking summer card at Headquarters, with Good to Firm ground under sunny skies suiting front-runners and horses with a clean action. Three featured races today, headlined by the Falmouth Stakes at Group 1 level. With only seven runners across each contest on average, value is tighter than a big handicap day, but there are still angles worth pursuing at the right prices.

1:50 — Oddschecker Handicap (Heritage Handicap) | 1m2f

Selection: Princling (2/1, Boyle Sports / Betfred)

Small field of six, but this is not a straightforward race. The headline number here is Princling’s internal rating of 101 against an official mark of just 91. That ten-point gap is significant. William Haggas has been in good form over the past fortnight, sending out 12 winners from 56 runners, and Tom Marquand gets the call in the saddle. Princling is proven over a mile and two furlongs on ground as quick as this, and while a fifth last time out raised a mild eyebrow, the profile before that, with a win and placed efforts included, reads well for a horse the handicapper may have let off lightly.

Evanesco is the top-rated horse in the field on 107 and holds obvious claims for Charlie Johnston, but at 9/2 with that seventh last time out, the value comparison does not flatter him. Princling at the 2/1 available with Boyle Sports and Betfred is the bet.

2:25 — Duchess of Cambridge Stakes (Fillies’ Group 2) | 6f

Selection: Libertango (4/6, Boyle Sports / Betfred)

Libertango heads the ratings by a clear margin, sitting on 112 against Senorita Bonita’s 103, and the unbeaten two-from-two record underlines that she belongs at the top of this market. George Boughey’s yard has been ticking over at a respectable clip with six winners from 33 runners in the past 14 days, and Billy Loughnane, who strikes at 18% at this track, takes the ride.

Senorita Bonita at 5/2 is the obvious danger. Oisin Murphy rides, she has placed form and a decent speed figure, and she will come here with purpose. But the gap in the ratings is hard to bridge at two years old, and Libertango’s winning form over course and distance is exactly what you want on Good to Firm ground at Newmarket in July.

Short-priced, yes. But the form and figures justify it.

3:35 — Falmouth Stakes (Fillies’ and Mares’ Group 1) | 1m

Selection: Blue Bolt (5/2, Boyle Sports / Betfred / LiveScore Bet)

Precise is the odds-on favourite and on paper the form stacks up, four wins from her last five starts with only a seventh interrupting the sequence. But 4/5 in a Group 1 of seven runners with variables including draw, going, and the slight query of that mid-sequence blip is not a price that excites.

Blue Bolt at 5/2 is considerably more interesting. Two wins on the spin, three from her last five, and she rates at 122 on the figures, level with Jancis and only two points behind Precise. Crucially she is proven over a mile on Good to Firm, which matters enormously on a day like this, and Andrew Balding has been firing at 14 winners from 68 runners in the past two weeks. Colin Keane, who won the Falmouth on Inspiral a few years back, knows this track and this type of race.

Jancis at 9/1 is also interesting as an each-way flutter given she also rates 122 and was runner-up last time, but the two-place terms in a seven-runner field make the each-way case marginal. Blue Bolt to win at 5/2 is the cleaner bet.

Venosa can be ignored. The Betfred price of 200/1 looks like a data glitch, but the figure of 84 tells you everything you need to know about her chances in a Group 1.
