Newmarket stages a top-drawer Saturday card with the July Cup as the headline act. Good to firm ground is the official description but light rain is in the air, which should keep conditions honest rather than genuinely fast. Charlie Appleby and William Buick continue to be the dominant yard-and-jockey combination at Headquarters, and both are involved in the two feature races. The Bunbury Cup provides the day’s most competitive betting heat with 15 runners and a wide-open look to the market.

Fifteen runners, four places at 1/5 odds, Good to Firm. This is exactly the kind of race where the market leader is rarely the answer and the value sits mid-to-back in the draw.

Selection: Royal Zabeel Each-Way at 10/1 (Boyle Sports / LiveScore Bet)

The angle here is brutally simple. Royal Zabeel won seven days ago, arrives at this course in the best form of the field, and is proven at today’s trip and going. Michael Appleby’s yard has been ticking over at 4/31 in the last fortnight which is not spectacular, but this horse does not need trainer momentum to recommend him. The concern about his patchy record before that latest win is fair, but punters forget that form-reversal winners in heritage handicaps are exactly the horses who’ve been dropped to a manageable mark before the handicapper reacts. At 10/1 in a 15-runner field, you are getting proper each-way value with four places on offer.

Dark Tornado at 18/1 is worth noting for those who want a longer-priced saver. Michael Wigham is the standout trainer angle of this entire card: his Newmarket A/E of 1.5 from 106 runners is exceptional, and his recent 14-day record reads 4 from 5. That is a yard absolutely firing. Dark Tornado Each-Way at 18/1 (Boyle Sports / Betfred) makes sense as a small each-way interest off that trainer angle alone.

4:00 — Boodles Superlative Stakes (Group 2, 7f)

Seven runners, two places at 1/4 odds. Abraham Lincoln is a short-priced favourite on the back of a single win and Ryan Moore’s booking, which is often enough to shorten a horse into false territory in juvenile Group races. He may well win, but 5/6 is not a betting proposition when you know so little about him.

Selection: Pikachu at 8/1 (Boyle Sports)

Charlie Johnston’s yard has been busy (9 from 67 in the last 14 days) and Pikachu holds the fastest speed figure in this line-up. He was a close second two starts back over this exact trip and going, which means he has already shown he belongs at this level. The fifth-place effort last time out is the only hesitation, but juveniles at this stage of the season can be inconsistent, and the physical profile of a horse who hits 7f on Good to Firm well is precisely what you want in the Superlative. At 8/1 against a favourite at 5/6, you are getting more than four times the price for a horse who arguably deserves to be much shorter given his speed figures.

Al Hudaiba (2/1, Betfred / LiveScore Bet) under William Buick for Appleby is the obvious market alternative. Appleby’s Newmarket stats (28% win rate, A/E 1.01) are the best of any trainer on the card, and Buick at 23% here is similarly consistent. But fifth of seven on figures and odds-on territory do not combine to create a compelling bet.

The big one. Eleven runners, three places at 1/5 odds, and a field that on paper looks wide open but on figures has a clear leader.

Selection: Satono Reve at 11/4 (LiveScore Bet)

Satono Reve sits top of the figures at a rating of 124 and holds the fastest speed figure in the entire July Cup field. Runner-up in each of his last two starts, he arrives at Newmarket proven over six furlongs on Good to Firm ground and with the sharpest underlying numbers of any horse in the race. The question asked of him is whether he can convert those placed efforts into a Group 1 win, and the answer from the form book is that he has done it before, three starts back. Christophe Lemaire is not a jockey who needs an introduction on the international stage.

The danger is Almeraq at 6/1 (Boyle Sports / Betfred). William Haggas’s colt has won his last two completed starts, handles today’s conditions, and arrives fresh enough at 21 days between runs. His form line reads 21F-11 and the fall between wins is irrelevant to his ability. Tom Marquand riding for Haggas at Newmarket is a solid combination, and Almeraq is worth including in any each-way multiple. At 6/1 with three places paid, there is genuine each-way interest in a wide-open Group 1.

Double Rush’s three-timer deserves respect but a speed figure of 98 is ninth of eleven at this level. That stat ends the conversation.

Three places at 1/5 odds makes an each-way saver sensible for anyone who wants cover, but the win case is strong enough to take him on the nose.
