Newton Abbot, Tuesday 23 June 2026 — Tips and Analysis
A seven-race card at Newton Abbot on good ground under mostly sunny skies. Jumping in summer can be a lottery, but there are some genuinely interesting angles today, particularly from the Skelton and Tizzard yards who both know this track well. Three races stand out as worthy of your attention.
6:10 — Celebrate Racing Staff Week Juvenile Maiden Hurdle (2m1f)
Selection: Affection (7/4, Boyle Sports)
Four runners and the market has already done most of the sorting. Sudbury Hill is the odds-on favourite off the back of a promising hurdling debut, but at 4/7 there is no value to chase there. Affection at 7/4 looks the smarter play.
David Pipe has two winners from six runners in the past 14 days, and this filly arrives having racked up multiple wins on the Flat in France over 10 to 12 furlongs. That trip profile fits perfectly for 2m1f over hurdles, and the switch from French all-weather and good-to-soft to good ground at Newton Abbot should not inconvenience her. David Noonan takes the ride on a filly who looks tailor-made for this assignment. Sudbury Hill may improve again for the extra experience, but Affection ought to be sharper and fitter coming from a strong Flat background.
6:45 — Happy Birthday June O’Dwyer Novices’ Hurdle (2m5½f)
Selection: Outmaster Each-Way (6/4, Boyle Sports)
Coumeenoole is a short-priced favourite at 1/2 and the form entitled to demand respect, winning a novice hurdle by 15 lengths. Dan Skelton has 11 winners from 26 runners in the past 14 days and Harry Skelton returns a 19% strike rate at Newton Abbot. That combination is rarely worth opposing lightly.
Yet Outmaster at 6/4 offers the most interesting angle. Paul Nicholls fires in 28% winners at this course, the highest strike rate of any trainer in today’s data, and Outmaster won his Newton Abbot debut in emphatic style. First-time cheekpieces are a positive flag, Freddie Gingell rides and his 24% course record here is the best of any jockey in the stats. The question mark around the strength of Outmaster’s debut form is fair, but a yard in this kind of shape with a course specialist in the saddle and headgear going on for the first time is worth taking at 6/4 each-way. Two places at quarter odds in a six-runner race gives you genuine cover.
8:20 — Murray Group Gallop Handicap Hurdle (3m2½f)
Selection: Cinnodin Each-Way (4/1, Boyle Sports)
The staying handicap over 3m2½f is the most competitive race on the card with eight runners, and Jamie Snowden’s Cinnodin stands out as the horse most likely to run to a career-best.
The form profile is straightforward: progressing with every step up in trip, a close second off 102 last time, and winning by over a length at a lower mark before that. Good ground suits him perfectly. First-time hood goes on, which adds a small positive, and Snowden has six winners from 13 runners in the past fortnight. At 4/1 in a race where the market analysis reportedly puts him clear at the head of affairs on figures, this is a horse the form book is pointing at without demanding a leap of faith on price.
Jafimgoso is the jolly at 15/8 for the in-form Skelton operation and cannot be dismissed. But 15/8 for a horse with a tendency to lug under pressure stepping up in trip is not the value bet on the card. Belgarum each-way is another option at 11/2, only 2lb higher than when second last time, with Freddie Gingell aboard and the J Tizzard yard posting a 20% course strike rate with an A/E of 1.06. If you want a saver behind Cinnodin, Belgarum is the one.
Cinnodin at 4/1 with three places on offer in this field represents solid each-way value for a horse in the form of his life at the right trip on the right ground.
Today’s NAP
Odds: 4/1 — Boyle Sports (others: 4/1 Betfred, 4/1 LiveScore Bet)
Form is trending in the right direction with every run, the trip is the biggest he has tackled and suits his staying profile, and good ground is exactly what connections want. Jamie Snowden is in the form of his life at present with six winners from 13 in the past 14 days, and a first-time hood suggests the team feel there is more to unlock. At 4/1 in a field of eight, the each-way terms are generous enough to make this the standout bet of the card.
