Nottingham, Saturday 4 July 2026 — Tips & Preview
Seven races on a good to firm card at Nottingham on a cloudy afternoon. The straight course rides true in these conditions and speed horses are at a premium. With the British Grand Prix firing up at Silverstone tomorrow, the racing crowd’s attention might be split, but there’s a solid card here with genuine angles to exploit. Three races stand out as bankable propositions.
6:00 — Racedays For 9 Pound At Nottingham Racecourse Novice Stakes (5f, GBB)
Selection: Glamorize (8/15 Boyle Sports / Betfred)
Plainly out of her depth in the Group 3 at Ascot last time, but that should be filed under experience rather than a genuine form reversal. Back at a sensible level now against rivals with little or no form, and the step back to a standard novice stakes puts her firmly in charge on ratings. Cheekpieces go on for the first time, which often sparks a positive reaction, and George Scott’s yard has returned three winners from 24 runners in the last fortnight. Good to firm is exactly what she wants. The price won’t excite anyone, but she’s the standout on merit.
Cosmic Mystery is the only realistic threat at 6/4. She tops the field on the official figures at 82, but Archie Watson’s yard is enduring a dire run, scoreless from 31 runners in the past fortnight. The unseating incident at Redcar adds uncertainty. Against a horse dropping in from a Group race, this is not her day.
6:30 — Ivor Thirst Sprint Novice Stakes (5f, GBB, 9 runners)
Selection: Court Alert (9/4 Boyle Sports / Betfred, 2/1 LiveScore Bet)
Rhys Clutterbuck gets the leg up here, and his 15% strike rate at Nottingham with an A/E of 1.14 is the kind of number that tells you he knows this track. Court Alert’s last run at Brighton was better than the bare result suggests. Denied a clear run having travelled ominously well, he had nothing left by the time daylight appeared. That was his second start back from wind surgery, and horses routinely take a run or two to fully hit their stride post-op. Eve Johnson Houghton has saddled four winners from 32 runners in the past fortnight. Good to firm over the minimum trip suits, and at 9/4 there’s value against rivals who are largely unproven or out of form.
Green Champion is a fascinating debutant from James Tate, who clicks at 15% at this track, and the Mehmas breeding screams speed. If the market tightens further before the off, he warrants a small interest. But Court Alert carries proven form and a clear performance angle that a newcomer cannot match today.
7:00 — Gold Star Gallop Handicap (6f, 8 runners)
Selection: Acclaimed Freedom (2/1 Boyle Sports / Betfred, 15/8 LiveScore Bet)
The pick of the card. George Scott’s three-year-old came within a neck of winning at Windsor off a mark 2lb lower than he carries today, and the upward trajectory throughout the season is hard to ignore. A win and a near-miss in his last two starts, a breathing issue apparently resolved, and he stretches comfortably to 6f. Scott’s yard is firing at three winners from 17 runners over the past fortnight and good to firm ground is no issue here. Rated clear of this field by the form figures, and 2/1 about the handicapper’s top-rated in a race like this represents genuine value rather than a liability.
Beyond Borders at 7/2 is the chief danger. A half-length second last time off a mark just 1lb lower, the form is solid and race-fitness is not in doubt. First-time cheekpieces and tongue-tie add a small element of the unknown. Emperor Caradoc Each-Way at 7/2 won this exact race twelve months ago and his course record is legitimate, making him an interesting saver at each-way terms.
Zarinca is interesting at 4/1 if you trust Edward Bethell (26% at Nottingham, A/E 1.36), but she remains unproven on turf, which is a real concern today.
Today’s NAP
Odds: 2/1 — Boyle Sports / Betfred (others: 15/8 LiveScore Bet)
The form line is clear: a win and a near-miss in his last two starts, a resolved breathing issue, and a mark that the handicapper hasn’t yet caught up with. George Scott’s yard is in form, the trip and going conditions fit perfectly, and 2/1 about the best-rated horse in a modest 8-runner handicap is fair value. This is a horse heading in the right direction against a field that largely isn’t.
