Form Going Into Group Stage Matchday 2
Panama arrive at BMO Field in Toronto on the back of a painful opening-night exit, losing 1-0 to Ghana thanks to an injury-time winner. That result was grim viewing. Five games of recent form show 9 scored but 11 conceded, and while the win over Dominican Republic flatters the numbers slightly, the 2-6 drubbing away to Brazil in pre-tournament prep was a serious red flag. This is a side that leaks goals and, at World Cup level, that gets punished.
Croatia are wounded too, going down 2-4 to England in what was a shambolic defensive showing. Seven goals scored in five matches, 11 conceded, including that Belgium shutout and the 1-3 loss in Brazil. Modric, Kovacic, Kramaric, Perisic, the quality is clearly there in that squad. But they’ve looked porous at the back, and the England result raises real questions about their defensive shape. The pressure is on both sides here: lose and it becomes very difficult to qualify from the group.
Team News
Both squads are fully fit and available, with no injury concerns heading into this one.
Goals Markets
Both of these teams have been leaking goals in recent matches, and neither has looked particularly solid at the back in the tournament so far. Croatia gave up four against England, Panama shipped one late on against Ghana after looking vulnerable throughout. Over 2.5 Goals is priced at 1.94 and that looks like genuine value given the attacking quality Croatia carry, with names like Kramaric, Musa and Baturina all capable of hurting a limited Panama defence. Under 2.5 at 1.87 is the flip side, but backing the under against a Croatia side that created plenty against England feels like leaving money on the table.
The Betting Angle
Croatia are 1.58 to win this and that feels about right. Panama have been competitive in patches, but their defensive record through this camp has been consistently poor, and Croatia are a different beast to Ghana. Modric pulling strings in midfield, Sucic offering energy, and Kramaric finding space against a Panama back line that has shown it can be got at. This is a must-win in practical terms for Croatia, and that desperation should translate into intensity rather than timidity.
Panama’s only route back into the group is a result here, but the gulf in individual quality is hard to ignore. Carrasquilla and Harvey will need to work hard just to limit space for Croatia in the centre of the pitch, and if that midfield battle is lost, it opens up quickly.
If you want a goalscorer angle to go alongside, Ante Budimir at 4.75 as first scorer is the standout price from the Croatia attackers. He’s in the squad for a reason and at that price he represents decent each-way value. Andrej Kramaric at 5.00 is another solid option if you think it opens up.
Croatia to win this is the call. Wounded pride, better players, and a team that knows what’s at stake.
Odds: 1.58 โ BoyleSports
Croatia have far too much class in midfield and attack for a Panama side that has struggled defensively throughout this camp. With both teams needing a result after opening-round defeats, Croatia’s superior individual quality should see them through. Back them to get the three points at BMO Field.
