Perth, Sunday 7 June: Tips and Best Bets
A solid Sunday card at Perth, where the going is good but rain is falling and conditions could ease as the day progresses. That matters here, particularly for horses who have built their form on a sound surface. Three feature chases headline proceedings, and the course specialist data is well worth leaning on today. Dan Skelton’s 34% strike rate at this track is the one that jumps off the page, and with Harry Skelton riding, his runners always demand respect. Sean Bowen and James Bowen are the jockeys to follow around this tight, turning course.
While Perth goes about its business this afternoon, the Monaco Grand Prix is running concurrently on the streets of Monte Carlo, which should keep the afternoon lively for sport fans. But on the racing front, three good handicap chases give us plenty to work with.
3:52 Perth Silver Cup Handicap Chase (2m, 6 runners)
Six runners, but the market has essentially made this a three-horse race. Newtown Rambler is the selection at 9/4 with LiveScore Bet.
Adrian Paul Keatley has a 20% strike rate at Perth with a healthy A/E of 1.19, and Newtown Rambler has already proven he handles this exact track and trip. He made all over the course and distance last month on good to soft, which is as close to today’s conditions as you could ask for. Before that, the yard freshened him up with cheekpieces and a tongue-tie in March, and the revival has been immediate and convincing. Oakley Brown’s 5lb claim keeps the weight competitive.
Captain Cool looks lively but his connections admit today’s ground is not ideal, and the current chase mark is an open question. Classic Maestro brings strong course form but steps back in trip. Newtown Rambler has already answered the key questions here, and at just under 5/2 on course, he is the bet.
4:27 Perth Gold Cup Handicap Chase (3m, 10 runners)
Statuario Each-Way is the angle in this competitive feature at 4/1 with Boyle Sports and Betfred.
The hat-trick angle in this specific race is compelling on its own, but the substance behind it is what seals it. Statuario dead-heated over this course and trip as recently as April for a seventh course success, and the handicapper has only put him up 3lb. Sean Bowen takes the ride, and his 32% win rate at Perth across 328 rides is comfortably the best of any jockey in the field. Mickey Bowen’s yard has returned 11 wins from 27 runners in the last 14 days and is clearly firing.
The concern is the mark, as Statuario has never won off this high a rating. Somespring Special brings back-to-back wins but faces a combined 11lb rise across her last two successes, and 3m is still relatively unexplored territory for her. Riskintheground with Harry Skelton up is the main dangers, the Skelton-Skelton combination always worth respecting here, but the spotlight points to stamina doubts over this trip, and all his best form sits at shorter.
Stans The Man is 4lb lower than when third in this race 12 months ago and cannot be ignored each-way, but Statuario’s specific record in this race, ridden by the best jockey on the track, sets him apart.
5:02 Malcolm Group Handicap Chase (3m, 8 runners)
Sir Carnegie takes the eye at 9/4 with Boyle Sports and Betfred, though the question about quick turnarounds gives slight pause.
He ran at Hexham yesterday evening, winning with first-time blinkers in a strong finish, and connections are prepared to run him again within 24 hours. That in itself tells you the yard thinks he is in excellent order. Mickey Bowen has sent out five winners from his last 20 runners, and James Bowen’s 26% course win rate with an A/E of 1.34 is outstanding. Sir Carnegie has already won over this course on good to soft, placed twice over the course and distance before that, and is clearly a horse who excels at Perth.
The risk is the very quick turnaround after a race, so each-way coverage is sensible given the eight-runner field and 3-place terms. Inis Oirr is a live alternative, winning over course and distance in April before a good second here last month, and Gregor Walkingshaw’s 19% course rate with an A/E of 1.48 makes him an interesting booking. Ira Hayes also appeals at 10/3 after a clear second at Market Rasen on similar ground, but Sir Carnegie’s course record and trainer momentum make him the call.
Today’s NAP
Odds: 9/4 โ LiveScore Bet (others: 5/2 Boyle Sports, 5/2 Betfred)
Course and distance winner last month under today’s conditions, trained by a yard with an A/E of 1.19 at this track, and fitted with the headgear combination that revived his form. This is a small field and the each-way case is limited, but at 9/4 for a confirmed course specialist with proven form in today’s conditions, this is the most straightforward win bet on the card. Newtown Rambler ticks every box.
