Perth, 2 July 2026: Tips and Selections
A six-race card at Perth on good ground under partly cloudy skies. Not the deepest card of the summer, but there are angles worth taking, particularly where trainer form and course bias align. Sean Bowen is the man to follow round here on a 32% strike rate, and Gordon Elliott’s string continues to travel north with purpose. Let’s get into it.
2:18 โ Horizon Group Maiden Hurdle (2m, Good)
Eleven runners, 3 places paid, and a race where the market tells you most of what you need to know at first glance. This comes down to two horses, but the better bet is not the favourite.
Starshine Legend (10/3, Boyle Sports / Betfred) is the selection. Olly Murphy has a superb 30% record at Perth, and he sends this five-year-old here with Sean Bowen booked, the best available jockey at the track on a 32% strike rate. The combination of those two alone would make this horse interesting. Add in the fact that a flat background suits good summer ground, the hurdles debut at Uttoxeter was a solid third against what should be a decent enough benchmark, and the form figures suggest there is plenty more to come. The Uttoxeter run came off just one piece of work over jumps, and this is a yard that knows how to place a horse to win a maiden. Top of the figures and undeniably the most progressive in the field.
Scriabin (7/4, Boyle Sports) is the obvious danger, going close last time at this track when going down by a head. He clearly handles the course and distance, but first-time tongue-tie is an unknown and the maiden tag suggests he finds one or two too good. If Starshine Legend reproduces anything like what Murphy’s juveniles tend to show on a second start, the market favourite may not see which way he went.
2:48 โ Kettle Produce Handicap Hurdle (2m, Good)
A small six-runner field so each-way terms are tight, but the race has a clear shape to it.
Pergamon (13/8, Boyle Sports / Betfred) has won back to back, most recently at Ludlow by two lengths in a handicap hurdle, and returns here after a short freshening. Yes, he is up 7lb for those wins, but this is summer handicapping on good ground and the horse is in form. The 2m trip on a sound surface is exactly what he wants, and the five-year-old looks like a progressive type still finding his feet in handicap company. Trainer Jennie Candlish has had two winners from 23 runners in the last fortnight, a modest hit rate, but Pergamon’s own form does the talking here. He is the horse in the race with the most recent winning momentum and should take plenty of stopping.
Ravenscraig Castle (11/4, Boyle Sports / Betfred) heads the figures and ran a solid third here 25 days ago. First-time blinkers for Iain Jardine, a trainer in fair recent form with four winners from 26 over the past fortnight. He is right in the mix, but Pergamon’s trajectory gives him the edge on the day.
3:18 โ Secure Air Parks Edinburgh Airport Parking Handicap Chase (2m4f, Good)
Seven runners, a GBB Race, and a field full of horses wearing new headgear for the first time. That in itself tells you connections are trying things, which can work either way.
Gunnery Sergeant (13/8, Boyle Sports / LiveScore Bet) is the pick. Gordon Elliott sends this six-year-old over fences for the very first time, and the chasing debut angle is a significant one. He has placed twice in hurdle company, handled 2m4f without issue, and now drops into handicap chase territory where his jumping, if clean, could unlock a better mark than he has been able to exploit over timber. First-time tongue-tie and cheekpieces add interest rather than concern, suggesting the team at Elliott’s yard have identified a reason why he has not quite delivered. Elliott runs at 28% at Perth and Sean Bowen is in the saddle, the most powerful pairing available on today’s card.
The concern is that chasing debuts carry inherent risk, and this is not a horse with an explosive hurdles profile. But at 13/8 with the best trainer-jockey combination in the race and a trip and ground that suit, the risk is adequately priced.
Wasdell Dundalk (4/1, Boyle Sports / Betfred) is a course-familiar rival with first-time cheekpieces, and heads the ratings on paper. But he was beaten 21 lengths here last time and Lisa Harrison’s yard has not been firing recently. Pass at the price.
Today’s NAP
Odds: 10/3 โ Boyle Sports (others: 10/3 Betfred)
Olly Murphy at 30% at Perth, Sean Bowen at 32% at Perth, and a horse that topped the figures on his hurdles debut at Uttoxeter. Good ground suits, the yard knows exactly how to place a horse to win a maiden, and this combination of trainer, jockey, and progressive form makes Starshine Legend the standout on the card. The favourite Scriabin has claims but has been placed in maidens before without winning. This horse has more ceiling.
