Pontefract, Tuesday 7 April 2026 — Tips & Preview
Pontefract is one of the most distinctive tracks in the north, a sharp, undulating circuit that catches some horses out on their first visit and rewards those who know the place. Good to soft ground today suits horses with a bit of class and stamina in their pedigree, and it will separate the serious contenders from those who need quicker footing. Three races are worth a serious look.
1:57 — Every Raceday Is Autism Friendly At Pontefract Novice Stakes (6f, Good To Soft, 12 runners)
This 6f novice is effectively a two-horse race on the formbook, but the market confirms it. Spaceman is the jolted favourite at 4/5 (Midnite), and the hype is not misplaced. The Starman colt ran a clear career-best when going joint-second of 15 at Redcar on debut, finishing with purpose over 6f on good ground. He should handle today's going without issue and Oisin Orr takes the ride, a pointer in itself. Fahey's yard is 2/24 in the last 14 days which is modest, but this horse is streets ahead of his rivals on raw ability and market confidence. He wins this.
The each-way alternative at a price is Invincible Boy Each-Way at 9/2 (Bet365, William Hill). Both runs came over 6f last autumn: a tight second at York on good ground, then a creditable third as beaten favourite on heavy at Doncaster. The York run in particular reads well, and the return to good-to-soft conditions rather than genuinely testing ground should suit. Fahey's other runner, Spaceman, looks the winner, but Invincible Boy is the clear second string and 9/2 gets you each-way terms with three places at 1/5 in a 12-runner field.
Selection: Spaceman — 4/5 Midnite. Win only at this price.
2:27 — Boyzlife Live At Ponte Friday 22nd May Maiden Stakes (1m, Good To Soft, 8 runners)
Only eight runners and one genuine star. Arabian Desert is 1/4 with William Hill and it is hard to argue. The Frankel colt posted a standout effort at Newbury in the Horris Hill, finishing a clear second behind a well-regarded rival in soft conditions at 7f, and had previously gone close over 1m at York on good ground. He is tailor-made for today's trip and going. Fahey's yard is not flying right now but Arabian Desert is a 3yo with a high ceiling, and this field would need to improve dramatically to trouble him.
There is a small each-way case for Haayimm Each-Way at 4/1 (Bet365). Edward Bethell's yard is in red-hot form at 2/4 over the past 14 days, and this gelded son of a mile-plus sire showed genuine promise on his sole start at Beverley over 8.5f on soft ground. He was the only newcomer in the field that day and still ran third. A gelding operation since suggests the connections are serious about him. At 4/1 in an 8-runner maiden, the each-way terms are marginal, but Bethell's form figures justify including him.
Selection: Arabian Desert — 1/4 William Hill. Clearly best on figures; simply get on.
3:57 — Ponte Premiership New For 2026 Handicap (5f, Good To Soft, 13 runners)
The feature race of the day is the one that merits the most thought. Thirteen runners, a wide range of handicap marks, and several horses who are genuinely hard to read on seasonal debut. This is where the value lives.
Dark Cloud Rising Each-Way at 5/1 (Bet365, Midnite) is the selection. O'Meara's four-year-old ended his 2025 campaign with a win and followed it with a solid Newcastle AW effort over 5f. The key angle here is course form: his sole start at Pontefract produced a reappearance win over 6f on good ground last April. He now drops to 5f, a trip the Spotlight notes he remains unexposed at, and this good-to-soft ground is similar to what he handled that day. Daniel Tudhope is the ideal booking on a track that rewards intelligent front-running. O'Meara's yard is quiet at 2/20 in the last 14 days, but this horse profiles as the kind they target a specific early-season race with. A 5/1 seasonal reappearance winner at this course deserves respect.
Atomic Force Each-Way at 15/2 (Bet365, William Hill) is worth adding to your each-way portfolio. Edward Bethell has his yard firing at 2/4 in the past 14 days, and this seven-year-old has won twice on the AW since returning from Hong Kong, gaining both wins over 5f. He was a dual Group scorer on turf at two, so the ability was always there. Current handicap mark looks generous given those recent wins, and Oisin Orr on board strengthens the case at 15/2.
Purosangue at 6/1 (Bet365, Coral) also merits a mention. Close fourth in the Ayr Gold Cup off a mark he now races from again, dropping back to 5f for the first time since a joint-best effort in a Sandown Group 3. Robert Cowell's record is poor at 0/5 but the horse is switching yards with the same owner, which keeps the continuity. He is not the bet, but he is dangerous.
Primary Selection: Dark Cloud Rising — 5/1 Bet365
Today's NAP
Odds: 1/4 — William Hill (others: 1.25 Betfair Exchange, 2/9 Bet365)
A Frankel colt with a Horris Hill second on his CV is not what you expect to see in a Pontefract maiden in April. Arabian Desert is miles clear on ratings, handles soft ground without any concern given his Newbury run, and steps up to 1m having already gone close at York over that trip. The price is short but the race is essentially uncompetitive. Rossa Ryan rides, the form is rock solid, and taking a short price on a banker is sometimes exactly the right move. He should win without coming off the bridle.
