Pontefract, 8 June 2026: Tips and Selections

Six races at Pontefract on a good surface with light rain in the air. That drizzle could be significant on a track that rewards horses with a bit of class through the bridle, and the going nudging softer suits a handful of horses across this card. Pontefract is a track where trainer course form matters more than most, and Ralph Beckett’s 27% strike rate here is the standout number on the racecard. It shapes up as a small but competitive Monday card. Here are the races worth betting on.

7:00 Racing TV EBF Restricted Maiden Fillies Stakes (6f, Good)

Eleven runners, three places, and a handful of interesting debutants alongside horses with a bit of form to go on. This is the trickiest race to assess, but there are two angles worth taking.

Consultation (9/4, Boyle Sports) ran at Wolverhampton on debut at 14/1 and finished fifth of six by two and a half lengths. The fourth from that race has since won, which gives that form a solid stamp. James Fanshawe’s yard has returned 4 wins from 22 runners over the last fortnight, and this filly is bred to improve significantly for the step up from an AW maiden into a restricted fillies event on turf. The RPR of 68 suggests she already has more ability than most in this field, and she looks the class act once the handicapper catches up with her.

Pearl Grace Each-Way (8/1, Boyle Sports) is the newcomer with serious pedigree appeal. A 35,000gns yearling, she is a half-sister to the dam who won the Irish 1,000 Guineas and Yorkshire Oaks. Charlie Johnston sends out 16% winners at Pontefract with an A/E of 1.07, and Sean Bowen takes the ride. Three places paid at 1/5 odds in an 11-runner field makes this each-way at 8/1 entirely worthwhile.

7:30 Fathers Day Family Day Sunday 21st June Handicap (1m4f, Good)

Five runners over a mile and four, which means only two places paid at 1/4 odds. Small field, but the race has a clear shape to it.

Analogical (9/4, Boyle Sports) is the horse to be on. Progressive four-year-old who made all to win at this exact course and distance last July on good ground, and then repeated the trick at Catterick last time out over the same trip, again on good. Sir Mark Prescott’s 18% Pontefract strike rate is well known, and Poppy Scott claims 7lbs, softening the 2lb penalty for that Catterick win. This horse races prominently, suits good ground, has already won here, and is stepping out at a career-high mark that still looks beatable. The yard runs horses when they are ready, and this one has the profile of a horse still improving. At 9/4 in a five-runner field where two of the others are either long absent or unproven, this is the play.

Say What You See at 11/10 is a fair horse who likes give in the ground and the going today could suit, but 11/10 against a horse with a disqualification stain on the record and a yard running at 1 from 11 in the last fortnight is not attractive enough to side with as a win-only favourite.

9:00 Mr Wolf Sprint Handicap (6f, Good)

Ten runners over six furlongs, three places paid at 1/5 odds. The light rain softening the ground makes this interesting for a couple of horses.

Veydari Each-Way (5/1, Boyle Sports) wins this race if the rain keeps falling. His only victory came over course and distance in October 2024, and his best form across the board is on soft ground. Richard Fahey’s yard at Pontefract carries a 30% win rate over the last decade and Oisin McSweeney on Emperor’s Son means Ryan Sexton gets the ride here, but the ground angle is what drives this selection. He makes his seasonal return today, and the going is tracking in exactly the direction that suits him. The 5/1 is fair value for a horse returning to his winning course and distance with conditions in his favour.

Fiscal Policy Each-Way (7/1, Boyle Sports) has eight wins to his name including a course and distance success in September 2024. Ruth Carr’s gelding is in fair form without winning this season, and a wide draw is noted as a concern, but the track record here speaks for itself. At 7/1 with three places on offer, he makes plenty of each-way sense.

Call Me Betty at 10/3 makes all the obvious appeal given she won on turf at Carlisle last time over the same trip, but 10/3 in a 10-runner handicap is short enough to pass up as a win-only single when better prices are available elsewhere on the card.

Sir Mark Prescott does not run horses to make up the numbers, and with two of the five rivals carrying either a long absence or unproven form at this level, this progressive four-year-old is the standout bet on the card.
