Pontefract, Sunday 21 June: Tips & Selections
A seven-race card at Pontefract on good ground, with partly cloudy skies keeping conditions consistent throughout the afternoon. The feature is the Listed Pontefract Castle Fillies’ Stakes over a mile and four furlongs, and there are decent puzzle-solving opportunities across the sprint handicap and the two-year-old novice. Pontefract is a quirky, undulating track where course form carries real weight, and the trainer stats here are worth leaning on hard.

Six runners, modest novice company, and Clash Of Hearts opens at 8/15 as a dominant market leader. The problem with blindly opposing short-priced favourites in two-year-old races is that they’re often short for good reason, and a horse that has already run twice and posted a pair of placed efforts has a clear form advantage over several debutants here.
The angle is Onslaught at 11/2 (Boyle Sports, Betfred) for Richard and Peter Fahey. The Fahey yard carries a 25% course-win strike rate at Pontefract (3/12) with an A/E of 1.13, meaning they run horses here that genuinely match the track. Oisin Orr takes the ride, and a Fahey two-year-old with no recorded form figure suggests this could be a debut runner coming in with a yard that knows how to place a juvenile on a first start. At 5/1 with LiveScore Bet, there is a case for siding with the course-smart trainer over several horses whose form figures tell us very little at this stage.
Regal Tiger at 5/1 (Boyle Sports) also deserves a mention. Hugo Palmer sends runners to win, and with Jason Hart up, this is not a horse being sent out just to get a run. Worth including in a combination if playing the race each-way.
Selection: Onslaught, 11/2 (Boyle Sports/Betfred)
3:05 โ Pontefract Castle Fillies’ Stakes, Listed (1m4f)
Coedana at 4/1 (Boyle Sports, Betfred) is the obvious starting point. Edward Bethell has an 18% course win strike rate at Pontefract across 61 runners, and Connor Beasley knows this track well. A form line of 113-23 reads as a horse that wins at the right level and places when the class steps up, which is exactly what you want in a Listed contest. Three wins from six career starts tells you this filly is competitive, and the form through the winter suggests she arrives in decent shape.
Merveilleux Lapin Each-Way at 15/2 (Boyle Sports, Betfred) is the each-way play in this ten-runner Listed race. Three places on offer at 1/5 odds, and a form line of 2130-2 points to a mare who consistently finds the frame. Owen Burrows has had three winners from twelve runners in the last fortnight, the yard is ticking over, and Callum Rodriguez is a capable booking. At 15/2, getting a fifth of the odds for a placed finish represents genuine value given the frequency with which this filly finishes in the money.
Little Dorrit at 8/1 (Boyle Sports, Betfred) is worth noting with Ray Dawson in the saddle. Dawson carries a 19% course win strike rate at Pontefract (3/16), and Roger Varian’s yard has been in fine fettle with nine winners from forty runners in the past fourteen days. The form figure trailing off after a promising sequence is worth investigating, but the trainer and jockey combination at this price demands attention.
Selection: Coedana, 4/1 โ Each-Way: Merveilleux Lapin, 15/2
4:05 โ Sunpak Potatoes Handicap (6f)
Seven runners over six furlongs on good ground. Small field, but the race has shape to it.
Rock Opera at 3/1 (Boyle Sports, Betfred) is the selection. The Fahey yard, as noted, has a 25% course win strike rate here and the A/E of 1.13 confirms the horses they send to Pontefract are running to their marks. Rock Opera’s form of 8-7341 shows a horse that has been progressive, with a win and a placed run in the last three starts. Oisin Orr takes the ride, and on six furlongs of good ground, a Fahey sprinter with recent winning form is well positioned.
Azure Zain is also from the Fahey yard and ran a 0 on the most recent start, which could indicate a horse that was unlucky or simply needs a different set of conditions. At 7/2 with Betfred, the yard connection gives it interest, but Rock Opera’s more consistent recent form makes it the preferred Fahey runner.
Ray Mon Dough at 3/1 (all books) with Tom Marquand is respected. Marquand carries a 21% course win strike rate at Pontefract, the best of any jockey in today’s data. A form line of 1-62 from a three-year-old suggests a horse still learning its trade, but the course jockey angle keeps it competitive at the price.
Selection: Rock Opera, 3/1 (Boyle Sports/Betfred)
Today’s NAP
Odds: 4/1 โ Boyle Sports (others: 4/1 Betfred)
Edward Bethell’s Pontefract course figures are solid across a significant sample, and Coedana arrives with three wins from six starts and a form line that screams competitive Listed performer. Connor Beasley rides with purpose on this track, the good ground suits, and a filly who posts 113 on the board does not look like one whose best days are behind her. At 4/1 in a ten-runner Listed contest, this is fair value for the most reliable form in the field.
