Pontefract, Tuesday 7 July: Best Bets on Good Ground

Pontefract stages a seven-race card on good ground under partly cloudy skies, and there is plenty to work with across a Listed fillies’ contest, a tight six-furlong handicap sprint, and an opener over a mile and a quarter. The undulating track at Pontefract rewards horses that stay on strongly, and today’s conditions suit those types perfectly. Here are the races worth targeting.

2:18 Noel John Curtin Memorial Maiden Stakes (1m2f)

Selection: Kinetic Impact (15/8 LiveScore Bet)

Charles Hills has had three winners from 14 runners in the last fortnight, a yard that is clearly ticking along nicely, and Tom Marquand brings a 20% strike rate at Pontefract with a positive attitude aboard this colt. Kinetic Impact has run twice, finishing fourth and third, and the step up to a mile and a quarter on good ground looks like the move that unlocks him. Three-year-olds stepping up in trip off a couple of encouraging efforts are often underrated in maiden company, and at 15/8 this is a fair price for the market leader from a yard in decent form.

Steel Raven at 4/1 is the each-way alternative worth noting. Adrian Paul Keatley runs at 15% at Pontefract with an A/E of 1.10, meaning his horses punch above their weight at this track. Two runs of third-third for Steel Raven suggests consistency without the win, but a switch to this course and distance could see that change.

2:48 Weatherbys Pipalong Stakes (Listed, 1m)

Selection: Arisaig (3/1 Boyle Sports/Betfred)

Jamie Spencer rides at 16% at Pontefract and while his A/E dips slightly below expectation, he is exactly the type of patient, front-to-back jockey this track rewards over a mile. Charlie Johnston has sent out nine winners from 67 runners over the last 14 days, a yard firing at a solid clip. Arisaig has Listed entries for a reason and her form figures of 30-248 show she is always competitive at this level without quite getting her head in front. Good ground suits, she handles a mile well, and at 3/1 she is the most logical market leader in a 12-runner field.

The price on Consecrated Each-Way at 11/1 (Boyle Sports, Betfred) deserves a line. William Haggas sends her here with nine winners from 26 runners in the past fortnight, a trainer absolutely in the form of his life. Tom Marquand takes the ride and his 20% at Pontefract is encouraging. Form of 637-77 reads modestly but this is Listed company where small margins separate the placings from the wins. Three places at 1/5 odds makes her a worthwhile each-way punt at double-figure prices.

3:18 Pontefract Park Silver Sprint Trophy Handicap (6f)

Selection: Dark Cloud Rising (6/4 Boyle Sports/Betfred)

Six runners only so no each-way flag here, but the value case for the favourite is genuinely strong. David O’Meara has sent out eight winners from 63 runners over the past two weeks, a yard with momentum, and Daniel Tudhope gets the leg up. Dark Cloud Rising’s last run was a win, the U in his recent form line representing a fall or unseating rather than a poor performance, and before that he was placed and placed again. Good ground over six furlongs at Pontefract suits the profile of a progressive four-year-old gelding, and O’Meara at this track is always worth respecting.

Badri at 4/1 is the danger. Michael Herrington has three winners from 17 runners recently and Jason Hart takes the mount. A nine-year-old might seem an unlikely challenger but his form figures of 406171 include back-to-back wins, and horses that age in sprint handicap company can be brutally reliable when the conditions suit. He keeps the shortlist honest.

Today’s NAP

Jockey silksDark Cloud Rising โ€” Pontefract Park Silver Sprint Trophy Handicap (3:18, Pontefract)
Odds: 6/4 โ€” Boyle Sports (others: 6/4 Betfred, 11/8 LiveScore Bet)

David O’Meara is among the sharpest handicap trainers in the north and arrives here with his yard firing. Dark Cloud Rising won last time out, handles good ground, and Daniel Tudhope is the right booking. Six-furlong sprints at Pontefract are unforgiving and this horse has the profile to dominate a small field. Take the 6/4 rather than the slightly trimmed 11/8 at LiveScore Bet.
