Pontefract, Wednesday 5 August 2026

Pontefract sits atop a hill and regularly sorts out the horses with the right attributes: stamina for the uphill finish, a liking for quick ground, and jockeys who know the track. Good to firm suits the speedier types today, and with three races to focus on, there are angles worth playing. Jockey stats here are striking: Jack Nicholls at 31% and Sean Kirrane at 17% with an A/E of 1.54 are the names to follow when they have a realistic chance. Harry Eustace’s yard is also worth noting, firing at 20% course strike rate and his runner in the handicap is firmly in the mix.

3:15 โ€” Jayne On Course Lady Bookmaker EBF Maiden Stakes (6f, Good To Firm)

K.R. Burke has had a productive fortnight, 10 winners from 47 runners, and Rock Steady Beat heads the market at 10/11. The form figures of 5-2-3 in a 2yo maiden suggest he keeps finding rivals good enough to beat him, and the market makes him odds-on favourite. No argument with his place chances, but at that price there’s no value in a maiden where the unexposed runners could easily outrun their odds.

The one who catches the eye at a price is Lady Henshaw, trained by Patrick Owens, who has been in decent form with 1 from 4 over the past fortnight. She ran seventh on debut, which is entirely acceptable for a first outing, and she gets a 5lb pull from the colts. Betfred go 7/2 about her, Boyle Sports 4/1, and in a small 8-runner field the scope for improvement from that debut run makes her genuinely competitive. The good to firm surface should pose no problems.

Selection: Lady Henshaw โ€” 4/1 Boyle Sports

Value bet at the price against an odds-on favourite who has had every chance to win and hasn’t managed it yet. Each-way terms cover three places but at this price and field size, win-only is the angle here.

4:45 โ€” Bet With Jayne Local Bookmaker Handicap Stakes (6f, Good To Firm)

This is a cracking little sprint handicap with two horses arriving in back-to-back winning form. The key question is which one has more upside left in the handicap.

Uppercase Each-Way is trained by Harry Eustace, who hits at 20% at this track, and jockey Kaiya Fraser has a 24% Pontefract strike rate with an A/E of 1.44. That is a strong local combination. His form reads 7-9-3-1-1, which shows he had a couple of poor efforts before clicking into form, and 20 days between runs suggests he arrives fresh and ready. The worry in the data is that the figures place him below the top of the field, but the trainer-jockey angle at this course is hard to ignore. Available at 3/1 across the board.

The danger is The Good Biscuit, who has won back to back and carries top weight from stall one, with Ruth Carr in fine nick at 5 from 27 recently. But at 7/2, he is factored in. Alfa Whiteburd is also in form but Ivan Furtado’s 4% recent strike rate is damaging at this level.

Selection: Uppercase โ€” 3/1 Boyle Sports, Betfred, LiveScore Bet

The Eustace-Fraser combination at a course where both go well makes this more than a coincidence. Fresh off a winning break, 6f on good to firm suits, and 3/1 in a competitive 9-runner handicap has each-way coverage for three places at 1/5.

5:15 โ€” Napoleons Casino Bradford Handicap Stakes (2m1f, Good To Firm)

Three runners, two at around even money, makes this a race to treat carefully. With fields this small, each-way betting is off the table.

Division Day is the standout on form. Three wins from five starts, including a victory two starts back, tells you this horse knows how to win. The trainer Brian Ellison has been quiet recently, 1 from 23 in the last fortnight, but with only three runners and the form in Division Day’s favour, the yard statistics are less relevant when the horse’s own record carries this much weight. Connor Beasley takes the ride and carries the lowest weight in the race at 129lb, which is a genuine advantage over the 2m1f trip where every pound matters up that Pontefract hill.

Something is consistent but hasn’t won recently, and at 11/8 you are backing consistency without the killer instinct. Division Day at 11/10 represents better value: a proper winner who is dropping back in weight relative to his rivals.

Selection: Division Day โ€” 11/10 Boyle Sports, Betfred, LiveScore Bet

Today’s NAP

Jockey silksUppercase โ€” Bet With Jayne Local Bookmaker Handicap Stakes (4:45, Pontefract)
Odds: 3/1 โ€” Boyle Sports (others: 3/1 Betfred, 3/1 LiveScore Bet)

Harry Eustace hits 20% at Pontefract and Kaiya Fraser has a 24% course win rate with an A/E of 1.44, making this one of the strongest trainer-jockey angles on the card. Uppercase arrives on the back of consecutive wins, is fresh after a 20-day break, and gets 6 furlongs on good to firm ground that he has handled before. At 3/1 in a nine-runner handicap, this is the day’s standout value.
