Punchestown Festival Day Tips: Saturday 2 May 2026
The Punchestown Festival rolls on and Saturday's card is loaded. Yielding ground dominates for most of the afternoon, softening into the back straight, and that will catch out horses who need a sound surface. Willie Mullins fields a small army across the card, but the key word here is selectivity. The trainer's 9/57 strike rate over the last 14 days is functional rather than flying, which means value punters should not be blindly following the blue and gold silks. Pick your spots carefully and there is serious money to be made on a day like this.
2:30 Howden Cross Country Chase (3mยฝf)
Selection: Fountain House at 10/3 (BetWright, Dragon Bet, BresBet)
This is a 19-runner cross country and the form book tells the story in capital letters. Fountain House has won four on the bounce, and that form line of 301111 is exactly what you want to see heading into a race like this. Ian John McCarthy is 1/1 over the last 14 days, small sample but the yard is ticking. Mr R James takes the 7lb claim and that saves valuable weight in a competitive field.
Lisnamult Lad (RPR 138) is the highest-rated runner in the race and deserves respect at 9/2, but his recent form of 52-FP9 is nowhere near the level of Fountain House's winning sequence. Olympic Man has the second-highest RPR on the card at 142, but P-P6P5 is a form line that screams unreliability, and the McConnell yard is 2/16 over the last fortnight.
Fountain House at 10/3 is not a huge price in a 19-runner cross country, but four consecutive wins is a compelling argument. Back to win.
3:05 DAR Golf Handicap Chase (3m7ยฝf)
Selection: Jasmin De Grugy Each-Way at 5/1 (Bet365, William Hill)
Three miles seven and a half furlongs on yielding ground. This is a stamina test and a half, and the 22-runner field makes each-way the only sensible approach for most in here. Jasmin De Grugy stands out. The RPR of 154 tops the field, the TS of 142 is the best on the card, and that form line of 32-4F1 shows a winner last time out. Anthony Honeyball is in fine form at 3/12 over the last 14 days, and Richie McLernon is a reliable partner at this level.
The concern is the trip. Three miles seven is a different beast from what Jasmin De Grugy has tackled previously, and the fall in the form line is worth noting. But the raw ability is there, the form is fresh, and at 5/1 in a wide-open 22-runner staying handicap, this represents genuine value each-way at six places paid to a fifth of the odds.
Folly Master at 12/1 (Bet365) is worth a small interest. The Tom Dreaper yard is quiet at 0/2 but the form of 2-5224 shows consistent placed efforts, the RPR of 146 is competitive, and this horse clearly handles this type of race. A speculative saver in a race with plenty of places on offer.
3:45 Palmerstown House Estate Pat Taaffe Handicap Chase (Listed, 3mยฝf)
Selection: Your Darling Each-Way at 16/1 (William Hill)
The Pat Taaffe is one of the races of the week and the 23-runner field makes this a handicapper's paradise. Your Darling catches the eye at the prices. Ben Pauling is in excellent form at 4/19 over the last two weeks, and that 1-4231 form line shows a horse who has been consistent throughout the season and knows how to win. The RPR of 157 and TS of 145 rank among the better numbers in the field, and at 16/1, there is a strong case that the handicapper has not fully penalised a horse running for an in-form British yard that does not travel without a genuine chance.
Ben Jones is a competent pilot and the trip suits. The yielding ground is the unknown quantity for a British-trained runner, but Pauling's horses travel when the yard is in this sort of nick. Six places are paid to a fifth of the odds, which makes 16/1 each-way extremely attractive in a 23-runner Listed handicap.
Argento Boy (12/1) from the Mullins string also catches the eye. The RPR of 158 and TS of 146 top the field, and -F1184 shows a horse capable of landing a race at this level. The concern is a fourth consecutive finish outside the frame, but at the price, Sean O'Keeffe and Mullins make this an honourable mention.
4:15 SBK Irish EBF Mares Champion Hurdle (Grade 1, 2m4ยฝf)
Selection: Wodhooh at 8/11 (William Hill, Unibet)
Four runners. One horse dominates the form book. Wodhooh comes into this off a sequence of 12-111 and that RPR of 160 is a full two pounds clear of Jade De Grugy, who is the only realistic danger. Gordon Elliott is 7/64 over the last fortnight which, in absolute terms, represents a firing yard when you factor in the volume of runners. Jack Kennedy has ridden this mare to victory before and knows her inside out.
Jade De Grugy under Paul Townend will give this a serious race. The 6/4 on offer reflects genuine ability with an RPR of 158 and TS of 148. But in a match race of this nature, Wodhooh's winning sequence and higher RPR make her a standout. She is odds-on for a reason. This is a short-priced win bet.
4:55 Ballymore Champion Four Year Old Hurdle (Grade 1, 2m)
Selection: Apolon De Charnie at 2/1 (Coral, Betfred, Boyle Sports)
Thirteen runners, but this Grade 1 comes down to a handful of realistic contenders. Apolon De Charnie under Paul Townend is the one to be on. An RPR of 152 and TS of 143 make him the classiest juvenile hurdler on the card, and the form of 21 shows he has been placed to improve after a debut second before landing his maiden last time. Mullins and Townend in a Grade 1 with a well-handicapped juvenile is not a combination to oppose lightly.
Matin Midi Et Soir at 8/1 (William Hill, Midnite) from the De Bromhead yard is the one to keep honest. The form of 1-21 shows a horse who handles this trip and the yielding ground, and Henry De Bromhead is 3/32 over the last two weeks which is not spectacular but is not dead cold either. At 8/1 in a 13-runner Grade 1 where the favourite is vulnerable, he makes an interesting each-way alternative.
Macho Man at 9/1 (Bet365) is another each-way shout at a big price, but Apolon De Charnie looks the standout win selection here.
5:30 Lawlor's Of Naas Handicap Hurdle (Listed, 2m4ยฝf)
Selection: Jump Allen at 9/4 (Betfred)
Jump Allen is the most obvious selection of the day. Willie Mullins, Paul Townend, an RPR of 152, and a form line of 3121-3 that shows a winner two back before a placed effort on return to action. This is a horse who has been campaigned carefully and arrives here at the right moment. The 9/4 available at Betfred is the best price and represents a fair reflection of his chance in a 19-runner field with five places on offer.
The yard is ticking rather than electric at 9/57, but Mullins with Townend in a Listed handicap hurdle with a genuine candidate is not an angle to dismiss. The yielding ground suits, the trip is ideal, and the weight of 152lbs is workable.
Storm Heart at 10/1 (Bet365, William Hill, Coral) is a respectable each-way alternative. The RPR of 154 is actually higher than Jump Allen, and that form of 2-1133 shows consistent placed efforts that suggest a big run without necessarily winning. At 10/1 with five places paid, he could give the each-way punter a run for their money.
6:05 Pro/Am INH Flat Race (2m)
Selection: Crystasia Each-Way at 6/1 (Bet365)
The bumper is the hardest race on the card to assess with limited form data, but Crystasia stands out. The De Bromhead connection is the key angle here. The yard is 3/32 over the last 14 days and while that is not a screaming form run, De Bromhead does not travel horses to a festival without purpose. At 6/1 in a wide-open 21-runner bumper with four places paid, this represents the best value in the race.
Market Square at 7/1 (Bet365, William Hill) from the Emmet Mullins yard is another to note. Mullins is 0/9 over the last fortnight, which is a cold streak, but the festival context sometimes resets these things. Ballypollard at 9/1 is unbeaten in one start and deserves respect, but limited evidence makes confidence hard to find.
Today's NAP
Odds: 8/11 โ William Hill (others: 8/11 Unibet, 1.75 Betfair Exchange)
Four-runner Grade 1 races rarely produce surprises when one horse holds a form advantage this clear. Wodhooh arrives off three consecutive wins, holds the top RPR in the field at 160, and has Jack Kennedy in the plate aboard a mare who travels strongly on this ground. Gordon Elliott's yard has sent 7 winners from 64 runners over the last fortnight, and in a virtual match race with Jade De Grugy the only credible threat, the favourite has every right to go off short and land this. Short-priced win bet only.
