Redcar, Thursday 30 April 2026: Tips & Selections
A decent Thursday card at Redcar on good to firm ground. Three races to focus on, with a novice contest that looks genuinely competitive and a handicap where the market is wide open. The going should suit horses with a bit of zip, so pay attention to those with previous form on fast turf. Let's get into it.

Selection: Whernside (11/4, William Hill / Coral)
Five runners, but this is a straightforward shortlist of two. The one that catches the eye is Whernside, trained by Edward Bethell, who has already won this race in 2024. That trainer-race connection is worth underlining, and the form from his Newcastle comeback this month is solid: he was runner-up over 7f on the all-weather, leaving his sole two-year-old effort well behind in the process. This is his turf debut, but the switch to good to firm conditions shouldn't inconvenience a horse that has already shown he handles quick surfaces at junior level.
Bethell's yard is ticking over at 5/24 in the last 14 days, which is respectable rather than red-hot, but the trainer clearly knows this race and this horse is on an upward curve. Callum Rodriguez takes the ride and he rides this track well.
The danger is Hungarian (evens, Bet365), who showed promise across four starts last year and has first-time cheekpieces replacing blinkers. The headgear switch could spark improvement, and evens reflects his clear form superiority on paper. But the fact the market hasn't shortened him beyond evens on a reappearance suggests punters aren't entirely convinced. At 11/4, Whernside is the each-way value play in a small field. Actually, with only five runners and two places, this is borderline, but the price differential makes Whernside the bet at odds against.

Selection: Egotistical (7/4, Bet365 / William Hill)
Roger Varian is running at 6/22 in the last 14 days, meaning the yard is firing, and Egotistical is the classiest horse in this field by some distance. Her RPR of 79 and TS of 68 put her a clear cut above the others, and she brings three runs of experience against a market rival, Confide In Me, who has won once on the all-weather.
Confide In Me (evens, Bet365) deserves respect. Jack Jones' yard is motoring at 3/13 over the last fortnight, and winning on debut at Southwell before carrying a 7lb penalty here shows genuine ability. But Egotistical's form figures of 3-23 show consistent placing under pressure, and she's trained by one of the sharpest operations in the country. On good to firm ground over six furlongs, she should be travelling well throughout and Rowan Scott is an underrated booking.
At 7/4, this isn't a bet you're getting rich on, but in a seven-runner fillies' novice, she's the most reliable anchor in the race.
4:30 โ Racing TV Free Trial Handicap (1m2f, Good To Firm)
Selection: James McHenry Each-Way (9/2, Bet365 / William Hill)
Nine runners, a wide-open market, and the form angles are genuinely interesting. James McHenry is the pick at 9/2. The Cambridgeshire runner-up angle from September 2024 is relevant context, he's been lightly campaigned since and clearly has something to give. At Musselburgh last time he was denied a clear run when finishing fifth of 12, which reads significantly better than the bare result. Now the trainer steps him back up to 1m2f, his optimum trip, and first-time cheekpieces go on. That combination, trip upgrade plus headgear, is the kind of angle that catches handicappers on the hop.
Edward Bethell saddles him and has two strong chances on this card, suggesting the yard is ready to go to war today. Callum Rodriguez is again in the saddle.
At 9/2 in a nine-runner handicap with three places at 1/5 odds, the each-way terms make sense. If the cheekpieces sharpen him up and he gets the run of the race, he's capable of going close at a price that reflects his recent quiet profile rather than his actual ability.
Keep an eye on Austrian Theory (8/1, Bet365) as the main danger. His last win came off this exact mark, he didn't run badly at Ripon on reappearance, and Tim Easterby's runners often improve dramatically for that first run back. The 8/1 is tempting in its own right.
Project Geofin (12/1) is the longer-priced interest. He was second over course and distance on his penultimate start last season and his record fresh in the spring is cited as decent. Geoff Oldroyd is 1/3 in the last 14 days, a small but active sample. Worth a small each-way interest if you're feeling adventurous.

Odds: 9/2 โ Bet365 (others: 9/2 William Hill, 5.7 Betfair Exchange)
A horse with a class ceiling well above this level, lightly raced since a Cambridgeshire placing and denied a clear run last time out. The step back up to 1m2f is the right call, first-time cheekpieces add intrigue, and Bethell clearly has his string in good order today with multiple strong entries. Good to firm conditions are no concern. At 9/2 each-way, there is genuine value against a horse who looks ahead of his current handicap mark.
