Redcar, Sunday 25 May 2026 — Tips & Previews
Redcar stages a seven-race card on good ground under sunny skies, and the feature is the Zetland Gold Cup, one of the better northern handicaps of the early summer. Three races are worth singling out for selection purposes, and there is a standout NAP on the card that looks very hard to oppose.
1:47 — Join Racing TV Now EBF Restricted Maiden Stakes (5f, 2yos)
Selection: Celestial Fire — 7/4 (Boyle Sports & Betfred)
Archie Watson’s juveniles have made a sharp start to the season, and Celestial Fire ticks plenty of boxes for a winning debut. The filly was privately purchased for £50,000 following the Goffs Breeze Ups, which tells you connections saw something they liked. Her pedigree is no afterthought either: a half-sister to Middle Park winner Supremacy sits in the family tree, and Watson consistently gets his breeze-up purchases to perform first time out.
El Floridita ran a pleasing fifth at Doncaster on debut and deserves respect at 11/4, but Watson’s 3/25 strike rate over the last fortnight represents a yard in reasonable nick, and Celestial Fire’s profile screams winning debut. Good ground suits fast, forward-going juveniles, and the 5f trip is ideal for a breeze-up purchase. Take the 7/4 and be confident.
2:22 — Watch Racing TV In HD Maiden Stakes (1m, 3yos)
Selection: Romanticizing — 11/10 (Boyle Sports & Betfred)
William Haggas has been in excellent form, going 11/53 over the last fortnight, which is a consistent yard-in-form reading. Romanticizing cost 180,000gns as a yearling and has already shown he belongs in this grade. At Nottingham over 1m on good ground, he pushed the long odds-on favourite close and was clear of the remainder. That form reads well for a contest like this.
The 11/10 will not excite the bookmakers, but this horse is value at those odds against a field where the main danger, Norman Invasion, has yet to race this season and carries the unknown quantity of having had his hood removed. Glen Nevis is interesting at 10/3 but only has one run behind him. Haggas has sent Romanticizing here to win, and on the Nottingham form, he should do exactly that. Straightforward.
4:07 — Racing TV Zetland Gold Cup Handicap (1m2f, Class 2)
Selection: Danger Bay Each-Way — 15/2 (Boyle Sports & LiveScore Bet)
Edward Bethell’s yard has not been firing at a high percentage recently, but Danger Bay is the type of horse who wins off his own back when conditions are right. The 4yo colt won back-to-back at Hamilton last season, including a handicap over 1m1f on good ground, and the key detail is what he did next. As a beaten favourite at York over 1m2f in September, he was clearly not at his best that day, but Bethell had him entered in the Cambridgeshire, which tells you the trainer thinks well of him.
Now stepping up to 1m2f on a track that rewards horses ridden with patience, and with his dam’s pedigree pointing firmly at this trip, the 4yo angle is compelling. Horses in this age group are still developing, and his two wins came on ground comparable to today. The Zetland Cup is a proper northern handicap, and Fierce Fortitude at 7/2 is the obvious favourite having won at this course and distance last month. He cannot be ignored, but 7/2 in a ten-runner Class 2 is short for a horse only 4lb higher than his last win. At double the price, Danger Bay represents the value play each-way at 3 places, 1/5 odds.
Salam Dubawi is the other each-way option worth a mention at 8/1. Jim Goldie has been hitting form sharply (7/41 last 14 days), and this horse made a mockery of Class 4 company at Hamilton last time. A 6lb rise in a stronger race is the obvious query, but Goldie knows how to place a horse. Small saver if you want a third string.
Today’s NAP
Odds: 11/10 — Boyle Sports (others: 11/10 Betfred, 11/10 LiveScore Bet)
William Haggas is in prime form at 11/53 over the last fortnight, and Romanticizing is a 180,000gns colt who has already proven himself at this trip on good ground. His Nottingham run, where he pressed the odds-on jolly close and beat the rest by a clear margin, is exactly the form profile that wins races like this. The opposition is thin, and the Haggas yard sends horses to Redcar to perform. A short-priced NAP, but a confident one.
