Redcar, Tuesday 26 May: Tips and Best Bets

A sunny afternoon on the Yorkshire coast with Good To Firm ground and seven races on the card. Redcar is a fair, galloping track that tends to reward straightforward, well-bred types, and the going today is exactly what several of these yards will have been waiting for. Three races stand out as worth targeting, and the trainer stats at this course are pointing in some very clear directions.

2:20 โ€” racingtv.com EBF Restricted Maiden Fillies’ Stakes (6f, Good To Firm)

Selection: Bella Lucia (10/3, Boyle Sports / Betfred / LiveScore Bet)

This is a relatively open juvenile fillies’ maiden but Bella Lucia catches the eye on debut form. She went to Beverley earlier this month as a well-backed 9/4 shot, was backed further on the day from 9/2, and ran a promising race to finish third over 5f on good to soft ground. That was a bare introduction, and trainer Gemma Tutty clearly thought enough of her to take that price. Stepping up to 6f on faster ground today looks the right move. Two-year-olds who run promising debut races and then get a trip increase on quicker going often improve dramatically, and the bare form of that Beverley run should be franked in time.

Freedom Flame ran fourth on debut at Wolverhampton but she beat horses who have since shown limited ability, and the Spotlite comment on Nour suggests she will be better suited by a longer trip in time. Khazamh is bred for speed out of a Marygate Stakes winner and could outrun 14/1, but Bella Lucia has an actual debut run in the book and it was a good one. At 10/3 she represents straightforward value in a field of mostly unexposed fillies.

2:50 โ€” Watch Irish Racing On Racing TV Restricted Maiden Stakes (1m2f, Good To Firm)

Selection: Hoseki (2/1, Boyle Sports / LiveScore Bet)

Six runners and it shapes up as a straightforward market affair, but there is a case for Hoseki over the market leader Cape Fear. William Haggas sits at 25% wins at Redcar, and while the A/E figure is only 0.96, Cieren Fallon at 21% here is a combination worth noting. More importantly, the horse herself has something to work with.

Her debut at Newbury over a mile on soft was a fair third, and the step up to 1m2f is the key move today on ground that is considerably better than she has encountered before. The comment on Cape Fear is telling in itself: he has been beaten four times and is described as consistent rather than progressive. That is not a ringing endorsement for a 5/4 favourite. Hoseki has improvement in her given the longer trip and she is by a stallion who gets horses that genuinely develop with distance. At 2/1 she is a fair price in a small field, and a Haggas filly stepping up in trip on her third start is often the kind of bet that repays patience.

3:50 โ€” Join Racing TV Now Handicap (1m, Good To Firm)

Selection: Classic Encounter (6/4, Boyle Sports / Betfred / LiveScore Bet)

George Boughey has a 33% strike rate at Redcar. That is the standout trainer stat on the card and it matters enormously here. Classic Encounter won over this course and distance in April last year on good ground, then followed up at York off a higher mark on good to firm in June. He is running off 1lb lower than that York win today and the ground is exactly what he wants.

The form this season has been respectable enough in competitive handicaps, and dropping down in grade here puts him in a very strong position. Desert Shadow has question marks over the trip, coming back from 1m4f and 1m2f with a visor on for the first time. Andesite is interesting with a tongue-tie but has not won since his debut. Classic Encounter has won over this course, on this type of ground, for a trainer who fires at nearly one in three at this track. The 6/4 is not fancy but it is fair value for a horse dropping in grade with obvious angles.

Jockey silksClassic Encounter โ€” Join Racing TV Now Handicap (3:50, Redcar)
Odds: 6/4 โ€” Boyle Sports (others: 6/4 Betfred, 6/4 LiveScore Bet)

George Boughey running at 33% wins at this track is the single sharpest statistic on the card today. Classic Encounter won over course and distance last April on good ground, then landed a York handicap on good to firm, and comes here off a mark 1lb below that York winning weight. Good To Firm conditions, a drop in grade, and one of the course’s most potent trainers in the saddle: this is a straightforward angle that the price does not fully reflect.
