Ripon, Thursday 28 May 2026: Tips and Best Bets

Good ground, plenty of sun, and a seven-race card at one of Yorkshire’s most underrated tracks. Ripon rewards horses who can handle a turning course, and today’s going should suit a wide range of types. Three races stand out from a punting perspective: the juvenile fillies’ novice, the 6f three-year-old handicap, and the Cathedral Handicap over a mile and two furlongs. Here’s where the value sits.

Selection: Lady Branksome at 4/1 (LiveScore Bet)

The jolly here is Etonnante, a Karl Burke newcomer who makes strong appeal on pedigree and whose yard is firing at 23% over the last fortnight. She deserves respect, but at 4/5 you’re paying through the nose for a debut run where the wide draw is an acknowledged negative even in the Spotlight commentary. Odds-on debutants at an odds-on price in a fillies’ novice is a mug’s game unless the market confidence is overwhelming, and here the opposition is better than it looks.

Lady Branksome was sent off favourite at Kempton last week over the same six furlongs. She drew wide, got shuffled wider still, and faded when the task became too much. Today she has stall one and the rail to herself. That is a significant upgrade in conditions for a horse who clearly has ability, and Hector Crouch, hitting 24% at this course, is a big positive booking. Michael Bell’s yard hasn’t clicked in the last two weeks, but one winner from 22 runners slightly understates where they are given the quality of races they target. Selection: Head For Freedom Each-Way at 8/1 (Boyle Sports / Betfred)

Eleven runners, a 6f handicap, and a field of three-year-olds with plenty still to find. The each-way market at 3 places looks workable for several here, but the one who catches the eye at a fair price is Head For Freedom.

The Michael and David Easterby yard has been active enough, and this horse ran a perfectly solid seasonal return when fourth of 13 over this course and distance last month. His Beverley run 24 days ago is easy to forgive given documented interference in the first half of the race. He’s back to a track where he’s already shown his best form, the going is similar to that Ripon reappearance, and at 8/1 there’s genuine each-way value. Joanna Mason is a competent pilot and knows this stable well. A field that looks open makes this one worth a small each-way play.

Others to note: Black Missile for Julie Camacho is unexposed, ran with promise at Beverley when still learning, and is 2lb lower today. North West Gal was unlucky at Catterick and could step forward. But Head For Freedom gets the nod on course form and stable angle.

3:40 — Ripon Cathedral Handicap (1m2f, Good, 10 runners)

Selection: El Matador at 3/1 (Boyle Sports / LiveScore Bet)

This is the race of the day and it’s competitive. Four or five horses could easily fill the places, but the one who most appeals is El Matador, the low-mileage Ralph Beckett four-year-old partnered by Hector Crouch.

The horse has been placed twice in a row this spring, running second at Lingfield over 7f on the all-weather and then running second again at Redcar over a mile on good ground. Both were solid efforts. The concern the Spotlight flags is whether 1m2f is stretching him, but that’s a manageable risk for a lightly-raced type who has clearly trained on from his juvenile days. Ralph Beckett hits 23% at Ripon over the long run, and while his recent 14-day strike rate of 4/39 is below his usual standard, that covers all their activity not just Ripon. Beckett sends runners here when he thinks they’ll run well. Crouch’s 24% at this track is the best of any jockey in the field.

The biggest danger is Parole d’Oro, who didn’t have a clean passage at Newbury and remains on a fair handicap mark. Spioradalta is a proven course winner at this trip and shouldn’t be underestimated back on home turf. But El Matador looks the value at the top of the market: better ground than he’d face on the AW, a step up in trip for a horse who stays well in his races, and the best jockey-course combination in the race.

At 4/1, there’s genuine value against an odds-on favourite who has never set foot on a racecourse before. The draw upgrade is the angle. Take the price now before it contracts if early money confirms the stable confidence.
