Ripon, Wednesday 3 June 2026 — Tips & Preview
Light rain has nudged the ground to Good To Soft at Ripon today, and that matters across every race on this six-race card. The track rewards horses that travel well through cut in the ground, and trainers who know the place tend to exploit that edge ruthlessly. Simon and Ed Crisford carry a 38% strike rate here, which is a number worth pinning to the top of your racecard. With the Epsom Derby just three days away, plenty of the serious Classic horses are elsewhere this week, which means opportunities open up on a card like this for progressive types dropping down a level.
Three races stood out as genuinely tippable. Here is the breakdown.
6:00 — British Stallion Studs EBF Novice Stakes (5f, Good To Soft)
Seven runners, a mix of course debutants and horses with one run under their belts. This is where the sales page meets the racetrack, and the two most interesting horses are the unraced newcomers with serious money behind them.
Social Symbol (5/2, Boyle Sports/Betfred) gets the nod here. The Crisford yard is operating at 38% at Ripon, and Callum Rodriguez rides with an 18% course strike rate. Social Symbol cost £145,000 at the breeze-up, is bred on the American speed side through Violence, and has a sibling, Royal Spa, who won at Grade 2 level in the US over 6-8.5 furlongs. The 5f on Good To Soft is a fair test for a horse of this profile. The yard shortlists horses carefully for first starts, and Crisford’s course record here is exceptional. There is a live chance this one arrives trained to the minute.
Fantasy Force (7/4, Boyle Sports/Betfred) is the form pick after a promising third at the York Dante festival, and trainer Adrian Paul Keatley has an A/E of 1.18 at this course, meaning his horses punch their weight. At 7/4 though, the price does not offer value against a well-bred newcomer at 5/2 from a yard firing at more than a third of their runners here.
Hidden Gift (3/1, Boyle Sports/Betfred) is another interesting newcomer from Wathnan Racing with a strong pedigree profile, and Oisin Orr takes the ride. Watch her in the market. If she drifts, Social Symbol looks the stronger bet.
6:35 — Book Online At ripon-races.co.uk Maiden Fillies’ Stakes (1m3f, Good To Soft)
Four runners. One of them is priced at 1/6 and it is hard to argue with the market here, but there is a case to make.
Gone By (1/6, Boyle Sports) has finished second twice from two starts, once at Newbury on debut and once at Ascot as a 10/11 favourite. She is a Juddmonte Irish Oaks entry, which tells you everything about how Ralph Beckett regards this filly. Her Newbury debut came on soft ground and she handled it well. The switch to 1m3f today is a positive step, and with only four runners this is about as clear a winning opportunity as she will find before stepping into Group company. She is not an each-way play at this price and in this field, just a horse to get onside if you are building an accumulator.
Golden Step (7/1, Boyle Sports/Betfred) is a Crisford runner who was slowly away on her Kempton debut over the same trip four weeks ago. She is a sister to an AW winner at this distance, switches to turf today, and a trainer operating at 38% here and hitting 1 winner from 10 runners in the last 14 days is worth noting. At 7/1 in a four-runner race where the favourite has never actually won, there is a small case for a saver. Crisford will have had this race circled for a reason.
7:10 — Bishopton Equine Handicap Each-Way (1m, Good To Soft)
Fourteen runners, four places, and a race with plenty of angles. This is the most competitive race on the card and the one where the going makes the biggest difference.
Havana Touch Each-Way (6/1, Boyle Sports) is the selection. Trainer John Butler has hit 5 wins from 17 runners in the last 14 days, a yard in seriously sharp form. Havana Touch spent the spring winning on the AW at Kempton and collecting two placed efforts around that victory. He showed promise on turf in May 2024, so this is not unknown territory. The key concern is whether the Good To Soft suits, but his Kempton win came in soft-ish conditions and the step back onto grass for a horse tuned up and running confidently is a strong angle. At 6/1 with four places on offer, the each-way case is solid.
Barley (11/4, Boyle Sports/Betfred) was a short head away from winning at Hamilton last Wednesday off this career-low mark. He is versatile with the ground and Tim Easterby’s yard is ticking over at a decent clip. The problem is the price. Being beaten a short head means he is entitled to be favourite here, and 11/4 in a 14-runner handicap asks a lot. Place money on Havana Touch at 6/1 offers considerably better return.
Avatar Jet (11/1, Boyle Sports/Betfred) is the each-way outsider to keep onside. He made all on his AW return at Southwell and won on turf in 2024. The third place at Southwell came in a race that is working out strongly. At 11/1 with four places, this is the kind of horse that can sneak into the frame in a big-field handicap when the pace is solid.
Amidst The Chaos (7/1, Boyle Sports) was denied a clear run both at Ripon in April and at Beverley three weeks ago. If the same story unfolds, it will frustrate. But course form over this trip on Good To Soft is exactly what you want, and a clean run could see him finish a lot closer than his recent finishing positions suggest.
Today’s NAP
Odds: 6/1 — Boyle Sports (others: 13/2 Betfred, 13/2 LiveScore Bet)
John Butler’s yard has fired in 5 winners from 17 runners over the last 14 days, making him one of the hottest trainers in the north right now. Havana Touch arrives here off a productive AW campaign that included a Kempton win and two placed efforts, with proven turf ability from 2024 to back it up. The Good To Soft is the only question mark, but his profile suggests a horse that handles cut, and at 6/1 with four places on offer in a 14-runner handicap, the each-way return is the best value on the entire card today.
