Tudhope’s 21% course strike rate at Ripon across a substantial sample of 474 rides gives you genuine confidence in the combination. Five-runner field, soft opposition, hot trainer, winning form. Short price but legitimate.

The Great St Wilfrid is a proper sprint handicap and with 15 runners paying four places at 1/5 odds, the each-way case writes itself for anything priced 6/1 or bigger with strong recent form.

Dark Cloud Rising is the horse who ticks the most boxes. David O’Meara sends him out with a win three starts back and placed finishes in each of his last two, which means the horse is absolutely in form and running consistently. He has the course and distance form to handle today’s conditions on good ground, and the 123lb weight is workable for a horse coming here off placed efforts rather than a winning penalty. Daniel Tudhope rides, and as noted, his 21% course win rate at Ripon over a huge 474-ride sample is not a fluke. Yes, stall 15 means he has ground to make up early, but Tudhope is precisely the jockey you want navigating a big field from a wide draw. He has the track knowledge to compensate.

The concern with Aramram is the 56-day absence combined with top weight of 138lb. Fast Track Harry at 9/2 is short enough that the value is gone if he underperforms. Lord Roxby won 12 days ago but is ranked 11th on figures and the speed rating of 84 does not inspire confidence against this quality. Dark Cloud Rising at 6/1 with Tudhope up is the value play in the race.
