A compact six-race card at Salisbury under Good To Firm conditions, which suits horses who travel on top of the ground. Three featured races below, with two juvenile novice events bookending a small but competitive mile handicap. Oisin Murphy, as ever at this track, is worth following closely — his 23% strike rate at Salisbury is the best of any rider in the field and his A/E of 1.13 shows he genuinely delivers value here, not just volume.

6:51 — Kinross British EBF Novice Stakes (6f, Good To Firm)

Selection: Soldier Of The Sea — evens (Boyle Sports)

A field of six two-year-olds, and Soldier Of The Sea, trained by William Knight, stands out as the only horse with a win on the board. He opened his account at the first attempt and goes straight to favouritism as a result. Knight’s yard has been ticking over at four winners from 20 runners in the last 14 days, which is solid enough, and jockey Taylor Fisher will be keen to press home the advantage on a horse with obvious ability.

The market makes this a three-way fight. Gentle Hurricane for Andrew Balding (11/4) gets Oisin Murphy in the saddle, which is always a pull at this track, while High Tower for George Boughey (11/4) carries the loughnane booking. Boughey has a 17% record at Salisbury but that A/E of 0.64 tells you the market frequently overestimates his runners here.

Evens about a juvenile with a winning debut and William Knight’s obvious confidence in running him in this grade is a fair price. Soldier Of The Sea to follow up.

7:21 — EBF Fillies’ Novice Stakes (6f, Good To Firm)

Selection: Silver Sovereign Each-Way — 4/1 (Boyle Sports, 7/2 LiveScore Bet)

This race loses two declared runners and the market is dominated by Topaz, the Jack Channon filly at 8/15. She has a 202 form line which shows consistency without a win, and at odds-on that’s asking you to do a lot of work for very little return. Channon’s yard is winless from 16 runners in the past 14 days — not a statistic that inspires confidence at short prices.

Silver Sovereign for Clive Cox at 4/1 is the sharper play. Cox has sent out three winners from 23 runners recently, and Kieran Shoemark rides regularly for the yard. The filly is a debutant on today’s fast ground, and Good To Firm at Salisbury suits the Cox profile of well-bred horses that move fluently on a sound surface.

Happy Enough for Ralph Beckett (5/1) is worth a mention. Beckett is Salisbury’s third most effective trainer by win percentage at 16%, and Rossa Ryan takes the ride. A seventh on debut is no disgrace for a Beckett juvenile, who typically improve markedly. At 5/1 she represents genuine each-way interest too.

Silver Sovereign each-way at 4/1 is the call, with two places on offer at 1/4 odds.

7:51 — Highclere Castle Gin Handicap Stakes (1m, Good To Firm)

Selection: Blue Prince — 13/8 (Boyle Sports, 13/8 Betfred)

Only four runners, so no each-way value here. But the race itself is well worth dissecting.

Arctic Thunder heads the figures at 96 and catches the eye on ratings, but Ed Walker’s horse is winless through his last five runs and his form has drifted to eighth most recently. Ratings that haven’t converted to wins for that long are a warning sign, not a green light.

Blue Prince at 13/8 is the more straightforward case. A winner two starts back and third last time, David Evans’s gelding has been the model of consistency. He sits second on our figures at 91, but that 80 speed rating is the highest in the race bar Arctic Thunder, and crucially he has form over today’s trip and on this ground. Evans has been active recently with three winners from 15 runners, and the yard is clearly in decent nick.

Celeborn under Billy Loughnane at 15/8 is competitive on price, but a fifth last time and a figure of 90 that sits behind both Arctic Thunder and Blue Prince makes him a harder sell. Oisin Murphy rides Allegresse at 9/2 and the Murphy factor at Salisbury can never be dismissed, but the 3-year-old is fourth on our ratings and comes off an unplaced run 31 days ago.

Blue Prince, consistent, proven at the trip and on the ground, is the play at 13/8.

Blue Prince won two starts back and followed up with a third, giving David Evans a yard that is currently in form and a horse with a clear profile for today’s conditions. He has run over this mile on Good To Firm ground before, his speed figure of 80 is right in the mix, and at 91 on our ratings he is far from outclassed. With only four runners the win market is the play, and 13/8 about the most consistent horse in the field is the standout price on the card tonight.
