Salisbury, Wednesday 12 August 2026
A sharp six-race card at Salisbury on good to firm ground, with two Listed races providing the headline action. The going suits horses who travel prominently and have a turn of foot, and the straight mile-plus course rewards those drawn low in bigger fields. Trainer stats at this track are worth leaning on hard today: Hugo Palmer’s 25% strike rate here comes with an A/E of 1.32, meaning his runners consistently outperform market expectations, while Connor Planas lands 38% of his rides at the track from a decent sample. Keep both in your thoughts across the card.
3:00 โ Frazier Jones Wine Merchants Handicap Stakes (6f, Good To Firm)
Selection: Regional Rock at 3/1 (all books)
Seven runners, only two places each-way, so this is not a race to complicate. Regional Rock (Hector Crouch, Ralph Beckett) is the standout on recent form. Win, second, second, third across his last four starts on identical or comparable ground tells you everything you need to know about his consistency at this level. Crouch lands 19% of his rides at Salisbury from a significant 214-runner sample, so the jockey-course combination stacks up well. The 131lb burden from stall four is workable on today’s ground, and Beckett’s yard, though not firing at its absolute best with four winners from 39 in the last fortnight, knows how to target these handicaps when a horse is ready.
So Darn Hot tops the figures and is legitimate at 4/1, but five runs without a win is a pattern the market should price in harder than it does. Regional Rock is the value.
3:30 โ British Stallion Studs EBF Stonehenge Stakes (Listed Race, 1m, Good To Firm)
Selection: Quest For Stars at 7/4 (BoyleSports), 13/8 (Betfred, LiveScore Bet)
Connor Planas is not in the saddle here, but the horse does the talking. Quest For Stars (Charlie Appleby) arrives here with back-to-back wins, handles today’s trip and good to firm ground without any reservations, and has a trainer operating at a scorching 37% strike rate across the last fortnight. That kind of form from a Godolphin yard means the horse is being targeted specifically, not just kept ticking over.
Scommessa Sicura (Oisin Murphy, Andrew Balding) is the legitimate danger. Four consecutive placed efforts culminating in a win last time out, experience of the conditions, and Murphy knowing this track inside out at 23% makes her the market leader for good reason. The filly’s 5lb weight allowance at 124lb against the colts on 129lb is also no small thing in a Listed race.
The case against Scommessa is that she has been placed rather than winning consistently, and Quest For Stars has simply done it twice in a row at this level. Appleby’s A/E at Salisbury (0.65) is the mild concern, but current form overrules historical course stats when a horse is this red-hot. Take the 13/8 at Betfred or LiveScore.
4:30 โ British Stallion Studs EBF Upavon Fillies’ Stakes (Listed Race, 1m2f, Good To Firm)
Selection: Regal Charm at 7/1 (BoyleSports, Betfred), 13/2 (LiveScore Bet)
Miss Scott is the 2/1 favourite ridden by Oisin Murphy for the Gosdens, and she deserves respect, a winner last time out and again three starts back. But a speed figure of 77 in a Listed race over 1m2f is genuinely concerning, and she sits bottom of the field on the figures published. The Gosden yard has a 25% course record at Salisbury, so the trainer angle is real, but the horse’s numbers have to back it up.
Regal Charm (Rob Hornby, Henry Candy) is the alternative that offers genuine value at the prices. Second last time out following a win two starts back, with experience over today’s trip and going, and a rating of 106 marking her as the highest-rated filly in the field. Candy’s yard has been in strong recent form with two from five in the last fortnight. From stall one, she gets the run of the race from a low draw on a course where that matters.
Felicitas (7/4) has the back-to-back wins on the clock but that seventh last time out after nearly two months off raises questions she has to answer here first. At 7/4 you are paying for the good form and hoping the layoff has not blunted her edge. Regal Charm at 7/1 represents much better value for a filly whose rating puts her at the top of the weights.
Today’s NAP
Odds: 3/1 โ BoyleSports (others: 3/1 Betfred, 3/1 LiveScore Bet)
Four finishes in the frame from his last four starts, on ground and over a trip he has handled before, with Hector Crouch in the saddle at a track where the jockey hits at 19% from a meaningful sample. Ralph Beckett does not run horses in handicaps like this without a purpose, and at 3/1 in a seven-runner field this is strong value against a favourite (So Darn Hot) who has gone five starts without winning. The most reliable horse in the race at a price that reflects none of that consistency.
