Sandown, Saturday 13 June 2026: Tips and Analysis

A seven-race card at Sandown on good ground, with the BetMGM Scurry Stakes the headline act. Three races stand out for punters hunting genuine value: the Listed sprint, the mile handicap with a big field, and the 1m2f maiden where the market might have underestimated a couple of interesting contenders. Good ground at Sandown suits horses who travel smoothly into their races, and the five-furlong track rewards pace and clean exits from the stalls.

2:42 BetMGM Scurry Stakes (Listed, 5f, Good)

The Scurry has attracted a solid nine-runner field and Charlie Appleby has sent two here, which tells you the Moulton Paddocks operation takes this race seriously. His recent 14-day strike rate of just 1 from 6 is modest, but his Sandown course stats are strong at 23% winners, and his runners here tend to run their race even when the form is quiet elsewhere.

Military Code (9/4, Boyle Sports / Betfred) is the one to side with here. Billy Loughnane rides, and his Sandown record is excellent, an A/E of 1.23 at the track showing he genuinely outperforms his market expectations here. Military Code’s form reads 10272, which looks mediocre at first glance, but dig deeper: the two wins either side of those placed efforts show a horse who knows how to win, and a mark suggesting he handles this sort of grade. The good ground suits, and five furlongs at Sandown rewards horses that break well and find a rhythm. Loughnane and Appleby is a strong combination for a track where both perform above expectation.

Words Of Truth at 2/1 is the clear market leader and the Appleby first string, but the price is tight for a horse who has just one win from his last five starts. Military Code at 9/4 offers the better risk-reward ratio within the same yard.

Lady Youmzain (11/2, Boyle Sports) catches the eye at a sensible price. Form reads 1-13, meaning three runs and two wins. Kevin Ryan’s yard has sent out 4 winners from 37 runners over the past fortnight, modest numbers but not alarming for a trainer who picks his spots in Listed company. A filly stepping into this level off a recent winning run is always worth respecting, and 11/2 about a horse who has placed in all but one career start looks attractive each-way.

3:17 Read Meg Nicholls’ Blog At betmgm.co.uk Handicap (1m, Good, 12 runners)

Twelve runners over a mile on good ground is a proper handicap, and this is where the day’s best value lies.

Beagle Bay (10/3, Boyle Sports / Betfred) is the most compelling selection on the card. Ralph Beckett has been in fine form, 6 winners from 44 runners in the past fortnight, and Hector Crouch takes the ride on a horse whose recent form reads 2-141. That means he has won twice in his last four completed starts, including a win and a second from his most recent two. Good ground on a galloping mile at Sandown suits a progressive four-year-old who appears to be reaching his peak. The price of 10/3 makes him a genuine value play, not just the form horse at a short price.

Raammee (7/2, Boyle Sports) Each-Way is the other serious contender. Roger Varian has been firing in the past two weeks, 8 winners from 31 runners is a 26% strike rate and well above his norm. Critically, Ray Dawson rides, and his Sandown A/E of 1.37 is the best of any jockey in the course stats provided. That combination of a yard in peak form and a jockey who genuinely goes well at this track is hard to ignore. Raammee’s form reads 11-4, two wins followed by a recent fourth. A horse who has won twice dropping back into a handicap context at 7/2 in a 12-runner field is very much an each-way play. Four places paid at 1/5 odds.

High Degree at 7/2 for William Haggas also has claims. Haggas is a reliable Sandown trainer with an A/E of 0.99 and form reading 1546-2 suggests a horse who is consistent without always winning. Tom Marquand is a quality booking. But at the same price as Raammee, the Varian runner with Dawson up looks the sharper bet given current yard and jockey form.

4:32 Darley British EBF Maiden Stakes (1m2f, Good, 6 runners)

A small field of six means each-way betting is not appropriate here, and the race is effectively between the John and Thady Gosden pair and the Andrew Balding runner.

Humphrey (6/4 Boyle Sports / Betfred, 11/8 LiveScore) is the selection. The Gosden yard has sent out 6 winners from 26 runners over the past fortnight and their Sandown record stands at 21% winners. Robert Havlin is a trusted stable jockey who knows exactly what these horses need. A debutant in a Gosden yard that sends one here at 6/4 usually means the horse has done something at home to warrant market confidence. Humphrey is an unknown quantity on form, but the stable profile and market move to favouritism tells the story.

Turty Tree at 3/1 for Andrew Balding has shown consistency with a form reading of 2-334, always there or thereabouts but yet to win. Tom Marquand is an excellent rider. However, the Gosden yard’s recent firepower and Sandown course stats make Humphrey the call.

Ralph Beckett has been in serious form over the past fortnight and Beagle Bay’s record of two wins from four recent starts shows a horse at the top of his game. Good ground over a mile at Sandown suits a progressive four-year-old, and 10/3 in a competitive 12-runner handicap represents genuine value rather than a grudging market price. The form figures 2-141 speak for themselves: this horse finishes races.
