Sandown Tips: Friday 3 July 2026
Sandown serves up a tight three-race Listed card on a sunny afternoon with the ground riding Good throughout. Small fields dominate, but there is plenty of interest in the angles. Roger Varian’s yard is firing at a remarkable clip right now, and that matters enormously when assessing the feature. With the British Grand Prix weekend kicking off at Silverstone tomorrow, there is a sporting buzz in the air, but all eyes here are firmly on the Surrey turf.
2:25 โ Coral Dragon Stakes (Listed, 5f)
A nine-runner dash for juvenile sprinters, and the form around Royal Ascot needs picking apart carefully. Ronson (9/4, Boyle Sports) is the horse that catches the eye. The narrow defeat at Beverley last time came despite the horse being noticeably green under pressure, and Rowan Scott kept his mount balanced rather than throwing everything at him. A short-head loss over 5f on good ground from a colt who clearly still has raw edges to smooth out reads as highly encouraging. Nigel Tinkler is in cracking form with six winners from 29 runners in the last fortnight, and the strike rate at 21% tells you the yard is not just making up numbers. The step up to Listed company is the question, but the raw ability is clearly there.
Bill The Bull (9/2, Boyle Sports) is the main danger. His win at Bath came after a drop in class but his earlier Sandown Listed form received an upgrade via Royal Ascot, which means this track holds no fear. Pat Cosgrave knows the course well and if the Bath win was a confidence restorer, he arrives here primed.
Miss Lizzy at 4/1 is respected but her Ascot run suggested the sharp 5f trips her slightly, and first-time headgear is speculative rather than convincing.
Selection: Ronson at 9/4 with Boyle Sports or Betfred. Green but gifted, trainer in form, trip suits perfectly.
3:35 โ Davies Insurance Solutions Gala Stakes (Listed, 1m2f)
Six runners and this is the race of the day. Sallaal goes off favourite at evens and the price is short enough to worry, but the form is difficult to ignore. A six-and-a-half-length win at Epsom despite trouble in running is the kind of performance that invites a straightforward question: what can he do when things go smoothly? Roger Varian has sent out 11 winners from 35 runners in the last 14 days, a truly sharp strike rate, and Ray Dawson has a 19% win rate at Sandown with an A/E of 1.34, meaning he consistently outperforms his market position at this track. The first-time hood is an interesting addition rather than a concern.
The danger is Glacius Each-Way at 7/1 (Boyle Sports or Betfred). Hugo Palmer’s three-year-old was hampered in a Group 3 at Ascot last time, and his true level is almost certainly understated by that beaten margin. Billy Loughnane carries a 16% Sandown win record, and the 10lb weight allowance versus the older horses is a significant asset. At 7/1, the each-way case is strong given only six runners pay two places at quarter odds.
Royal Rhyme at 10/3 has genuine excuses for his 2026 form and the first-time tongue-tie is a serious positive flag, but K R Burke’s overall 14-day numbers across both runners here (7/46 and 7/55) show a yard ticking over rather than firing on all cylinders. At the price, Sallaal offers better.
Selection: Sallaal at evens with Boyle Sports or Betfred. Varian firing, Dawson suited to Sandown, and the Epsom performance contained plenty in reserve.
4:10 โ Coral Marathon (Listed, 2m)
Five runners over two miles and Lazy Griff at 4/7 (Boyle Sports) is short enough to raise eyebrows. The price does not offer value to win, but the form justifies favouritism: a two-length third here over this exact course and distance on his return from a long absence is a strong foundation, and Charlie Johnston sends out runners in good shape with nine winners from 67 runners across the stable over the last fortnight. Billy Loughnane is in good nick across the board.
The each-way angle sits with Paradias Each-Way at 11/2 (Boyle Sports or Betfred). This horse ran to form finishing five lengths behind the leaders here last time, confirming he handles the course and distance well. Alan King has limited ammunition right now but Paradias himself is consistent and the track form is clear. At 11/2 with two places paid, the each-way case is sound in a small field where the favourite could easily be beaten on the day.
Duke Of Oxford with Ryan Moore is worth a glance at 10/1 but Michael Bell’s lean spell in the last fortnight (1/21) is a real red flag, and the six-length defeat here last time is not easy to dismiss even with the tongue-tie applied.
Selection: Lazy Griff at 4/7 with Boyle Sports or Betfred. If you want the win bet, he is the most solid option on the card. Back Paradias each-way at 11/2 to frame the race.
Today’s NAP
Odds: Evens โ Boyle Sports (others: Evens Betfred, Evens LiveScore Bet)
Roger Varian’s yard is operating at an exceptional rate with 11 winners from 35 runners over the last fortnight, and Ray Dawson’s Sandown record shows consistent profit at 19% wins with an A/E of 1.34. Sallaal’s Epsom demolition came despite trouble in running, meaning the six-and-a-half-length winning margin almost certainly undersells the performance. Evens is short, but this is as close to a banker as Sandown offers today and the first-time hood adds rather than detracts.
