Sandown, Saturday 4 July 2026: Eclipse Day Tips

Eclipse Day at Sandown is one of the great fixtures in the Flat calendar, and this year’s card has genuine depth across three featured races. Good to firm ground on the Eclipse course and good on the sprint track suits horses who travel with fluency, so anything needing cut will be on the back foot. With the British Grand Prix weekend firing up at Silverstone tomorrow, this is the sport’s big centrepiece today, and the Eclipse itself is a proper puzzle worth unpicking.

1:50 — Coral Charge (Group 3, 5f, Good)

Ten runners, minimum trip, fast ground. This race has a wide-open look to it on paper, but the form reading is pretty clear once you strip out the non-contenders.

Words Of Truth (Billy Loughnane, Charlie Appleby) is the selection at 3/1 with Boyle Sports. He won a Listed race at this very course last time by a length with a bit in hand, and Appleby’s yard has been flying with a 24% course strike rate at Sandown. The comment that he “should have come on for that outing” is significant: this is a horse improving run by run, and the step back up in grade looks squarely within his compass given the form he showed here last time. The slight caveat is that he marginally prefers a touch of cut, but on genuine good ground he won’t be stopping. Loughnane has a solid course record here with an A/E of 1.11, and Appleby runners at this track routinely perform above market expectation.

Rumstar at 5/2 is impossible to ignore given he won this race 12 months ago and showed on reappearance that he retains all his ability. The issue is he’s winless in five and was beaten a long way at the top level last time. He frames the race but Words Of Truth represents better value at bigger odds with the improving profile.

Asfoora is a multiple Group 1 winner and you cannot dismiss her, but the wide draw is a genuine problem over five furlongs, and she’s yet to fully click this season despite the step forward at Ascot. If she fires, she wins, but at 9/4 you’re taking on too much uncertainty.

3:00 — Coral Distaff (Fillies’ Listed, 1m, Good To Firm)

Nine fillies, good to firm ground, and a race that looks like it comes down to a straight fight between two in-form yards.

Sacred Ground (Ryan Moore, John and Thady Gosden) at 11/4 with Boyle Sports and Betfred is the selection. The Gosden yard is firing with seven wins from 21 runners in the last fortnight, a remarkable strike rate. Ryan Moore’s course record here is built on 193 wins from 999 rides, and he’s the man you want in the plate when a horse needs managing. Sacred Ground was beaten just half a length last time at Goodwood despite being ridden too soon, and cheekpieces go on for the first time to help settle her. She handles this trip and ground well, and the form from Goodwood reads well.

Secret Of Life (Ralph Beckett, unbeaten in two) is an exciting prospect and Beckett’s yard is also in fine form, but she’s unexposed at this level and carries the risk of any filly stepping up in class for the first time. She could win but is priced accordingly. Sacred Ground has the form, the proven conditions, and Moore in the saddle.

Act Of Kindness for Charlie Appleby is also interesting given the yard’s Sandown record, but the absence concern and a fourth-place finish last time at York leave her fractionally short of Sacred Ground on the form line.

3:35 — Coral-Eclipse (Group 1, 1m2f, Good To Firm)

Seven runners, half a million pounds in prize money, and one of the best races of the British Flat season. The form behind Constitution River is outstanding, and at 5/6 he’s a deserving favourite, but the question over whether he truly stays ten furlongs is the angle for those hunting value.

Constitution River (Ryan Moore, A P O’Brien) has four wins from five starts and landed a Group 1 at Chantilly last time. Aidan O’Brien has a formidable record in this race and Ryan Moore is the optimal rider if you need a horse placed tactically in a seven-runner Group 1. He’s the banker for most people and it’s easy to see why.

The value play, however, is Saddadd Each-Way (Ray Dawson, Roger Varian) at 7/1 with Boyle Sports and Betfred. He was a genuine Group 1 performer when third at The Curragh last time, beaten three lengths, with that form subsequently franked at the top level. The key angle: the comment explicitly flags that he can improve with a closer position to the pace today, and Ray Dawson boasts an outstanding A/E of 1.38 at Sandown with a 21% strike rate. Varian has sent out 40 winners at this track. If the tactical switch works and Dawson positions him handily rather than off the pace, Saddadd is a genuine each-way threat at 7/1 with two places paid at a quarter the odds.

Hawk Mountain at 7/1 is another live contender. A confirmed front-runner who was only beaten three-quarters of a length in a Group 1 at Chantilly, cheekpieces go on and he clearly has more to offer. The complication is that Constitution River opposed him that day and came out on top, so he’s got a head to turn around. Still, at the same price as Saddadd, he offers more upside if the front-running tactics click.

Gethin at 4/1 each-way is solid each-way value given his narrow defeat at this track last time and progressive form, but the going concern is real: quicker than ideal ground is specifically flagged, and Owen Burrows’ A/E of 0.93 at Sandown suggests the yard slightly underperforms here relative to market expectation.
