Sandown, Wednesday 29 July: Tips and Analysis

A midweek card at Sandown gives us three races worth pulling apart, with some decent trainer and jockey angles to work with across a compact six-race programme. The going is as yet unconfirmed, so keep an eye on the going sticks before staking, but the form angles below hold regardless of a point or two of change on the stick.

Two names to keep front of mind across the card: Connor Planas, who hits at 23% at Sandown with an A/E of 2.77 (outstanding), and Harry Charlton’s yard, which runs at 19% here with an A/E of 1.24. Both trainers punch above their market weight at this track.

6:50 — Chasemore Farm EBF Novice Stakes (7f, 2yo)

Seven juvenile colts, but effectively a three-horse race once you strip away the 20/1 and 40/1 shots. The market has condensed around Quest For Stars, Lancaster Tower, and King High, and the angle here is clear.

John and Thady Gosden send Lancaster Tower out with Robert Havlin aboard, and the Gosden operation is absolutely firing right now: 7 winners from 15 runners in the last 14 days is a 47% strike rate. When a yard is running that hot, you back their runners at Sandown, where the operation returns 22% historically. Lancaster Tower is a 7f debutant by a sire likely to appreciate cut in the ground, and at 13/8 he represents the play.

Quest For Stars is odds-on having won on debut, and Charlie Appleby with Connor Planas is not a combination to dismiss lightly. But the Gosden yard’s current form edge, combined with the course stats, makes Lancaster Tower the value proposition at the industry price. King High at 7/2 is worth a small saver if you want cover.

5:45 — Spillers Future Champions Apprentice Handicap Stakes (1m, 5 runners)

A small-field apprentice handicap over a mile, and the market has made Best Rate the hot favourite off the back of two recent wins. The weight concern is legitimate at 144lbs from a rating of 90, but his 12-day turnaround says connections are confident.

Selection: Happy Banner at 3/1 (Boyle Sports / Betfred)

Ed Walker’s yard has been in tremendous form, returning 10 winners from 36 runners in the last 14 days (28%), and Happy Banner brings a profile that screams “due a win.” Five consecutive placed efforts (three seconds, two thirds) without a victory is the sort of form line that eventually turns. At a mile, with Ashley Lewis keeping 7lbs in the saddle, the weight advantage over Best Rate (11lbs) is significant in a small field. The only question is whether he can finally convert those places, but the trainer form says now is the time.

Jungle Ruler tops the figures on ratings at 93, but Michael Appleby’s yard is cold at 1 from 23 (4%) in the last fortnight. That’s a stark warning sign and enough to keep him at arm’s length at 10/3.

6:15 — Spillers Handicap Stakes (5f, 7 runners)

A seven-runner sprint handicap with some genuine questions to answer across the field. Long absences litter the form book here: Army Bugler has been off 306 days, Hypnotised 96 days, Novelette 59 days, Wheels Of Fire 58 days. That narrows the realistic contenders considerably.

Selection: Atticum Each-Way at 4/1 (Boyle Sports / Betfred)

Yes, Robert Cowell’s yard is 0 from 10 in the last 14 days, and that has to be acknowledged. But Atticum’s form profile is the most solid in the race: a win four starts back, a placed effort before that, and a respectable third last time out. He heads the market joint-top with Wheels Of Fire and tops the expert ratings at 94. Jack Mitchell takes the ride, which is a positive booking, and from draw 3 on a 5f course he avoids the extremes of the draw.

Justcallmepete has course-proven ability and Tony Carroll keeps things ticking over at 5 from 36, but the 48-day break and top weight of 140lbs under an apprentice concede a lot here. Rage Of Thunder at 3/1 is the alternative if you want to side with the Gary and Josh Moore yard, who return an A/E of 1.27 at Sandown, but the Moore yard is only 1 from 12 recently so the yard form doesn’t back it up right now.

With seven runners and Atticum available at 4/1, the each-way terms (2 places at 1/4) represent genuine value for a horse who has placed consistently.
