Sligo, Tuesday 12 May 2026 – Racing Tips

Sligo is one of Ireland’s most picturesque tracks and also one of its most quirky. The tight, undulating circuit suits handy, adaptable types over bigger, galloping models. Good ground today brings the form book to life and means horses with soft-ground form only need treating with caution. Three races stand out for punters looking for a genuine angle.

5:27 — Adare Manor Opportunity Maiden Hurdle (2m2f)

Selection: Hey Now — 10/3 Boyle Sports, 10/3 Betfred, 3/1 LiveScore Bet

Andrew McNamara’s yard is running at a scorching 2/4 in the last 14 days and that stat alone is worth taking seriously at a track like Sligo. Hey Now is the class pick on RPR, a mark of 115 dwarfing anything else in the field. He was only fifth on his hurdling debut at Clonmel but the form looks solid: the third horse has since won, and the fourth is now rated 107. That debut was on soft going, and the Spotlight notes he is bred for good ground. Today’s conditions suit him far better. Yes, the tight Sligo track could test a bigger gelding, but the step up in going quality should bring a meaningful uptick in performance.

Casual Water gets a mention on pedigree alone. A half-brother to Altior is not to be dismissed and Mullins rarely runs horses at this level without a reason. His debut over 3m at Limerick on bad ground was an obvious non-event. Shorter trip, drier surface, the potential is there. At 5/1 he fills the each-way slot if you want cover.

5:58 — DecoClip Construction Company Mares Maiden Hurdle (2m2f)

Selection: Beir Bua — 6/4 Boyle Sports, 11/8 LiveScore Bet

Beir Bua is the standout on RPR 121, which is a serious figure for a mare in a race of this grade. She won a Wexford bumper last August and was second on her hurdling debut at Kilbeggan, both runs coming with a tongue-tie. The tongue-tie is removed today, which can be read as the trainer feeling she no longer needs it as a crutch. Andrew Slattery’s yard is in fair nick at 4/28 in the last two weeks, and this looks a smart opportunity to get her off the mark.

Lumiere Du Large is interesting purely for the stable switch from Mullins to Elliott. That is not a move that happens casually, and Elliott will want to demonstrate his charge can still perform at 4/1. She is not discarded, but her recent form in Ireland was alarming. Keilah at 9/1 might nip into the places if she settles better than she has previously, worth a small saver each-way if you are building a Sligo double. Beir Bua is the banker of the two mares races.

6:58 — Enda McGoldrick, Plant & Agri Hire Maiden Hurdle (2m4f)

Selection: Speculateur — 2/13 Boyle Sports, 1/6 LiveScore Bet

Speculateur is a short-priced favourite and there is no point pretending otherwise, but the angle here is genuine. Gordon Elliott’s yard is operating at 6/87 in the last fortnight, which is modest, but Speculateur is a point winner rated 117 who has placed in all five starts over hurdles. He has been consistently beaten by horses who turned out to be better than him on the day, and this field simply does not contain anything close to that quality. Red Or White is the only realistic threat on form, rated 94 and with course form to his name, but he has been off since August and faces a horse that is significantly superior on official ratings.

Good ground is a move in Speculateur’s favour. His Clonmel run on yielding left him 7 lengths off the winner, and a faster surface over this extended trip should allow him to travel more comfortably. He cannot keep finishing placed in races of this level. Back him to finally get it right and if the price has shortened further by the time you read this, the win-only return is still acceptable given the weakness of the opposition.

Each-way note: Red Or White Each-Way at 6/1 (Boyle Sports) is worth a small saver given his course form and place terms, providing Speculateur flops again.

Today’s NAP

Beir Bua — DecoClip Construction Company Mares Maiden Hurdle (5:58, Sligo)
Odds: 6/4 — Boyle Sports (others: 11/8 LiveScore Bet, SP Betfred)

The highest-rated mare in the race by a significant margin, Beir Bua has already shown she can win in a bumper and run competitively over hurdles. The removal of the tongue-tie signals trainer confidence rather than a lack of options. Andrew Slattery’s yard is in decent form, the going is good which suits, and a wide-open 17-runner field still has no credible rival on form or ratings. The 6/4 available at Boyle Sports represents fair value for a mare who looks ready to finally get her head in front over timber.
