Southwell (AW), Wednesday 15 April 2026
A midweek Fibresand card at Southwell is rarely glamorous, but Wednesday's seven-race bill has genuine angles worth pursuing. Standard going on the all-weather suits horses who like a true surface, and three races in particular stand out for punters willing to dig beneath the market favourites. With LIV Golf kicking off in Mexico City tomorrow and the RBC Heritage also getting underway, it's a light midweek sports slate, which means the sharp money tends to converge on cards like this one. Let's get into it.
5:22 โ EBF Novice Stakes (5f, 2yo)
Five runners, all debutants bar two, and the market has landed on Pershaada (Richard Hannon) as a short-priced favourite after her third at Wolverhampton nine days ago. She was odds-on that day and had to wait momentarily for a gap, so there is an improvement case. But here's the thing: she was still beaten at odds-on on a track that should have suited, and she steps up in company here. Fading into favouritism at 15/8 (Bet365) is not a compelling bet.
The horse that catches the eye is Havana Laff Each-Way at 9/1 (Bet365). She cost ยฃ80,000 as a yearling, which is meaningful context for a race of this level. Her Havana Grey pedigree screams speed, her half-sister Cressida Wildes won at 5f including on the all-weather with an RPR of 84, and the dam herself won over 5f as a two-year-old. This is precisely the right trip and surface for a debut from this family. Newland and Insole are running at 5/24 over the last fortnight, so the yard is ticking over, and at 9/1 against a short-priced ex-odds-on favourite, the each-way case is strong in a race that pays two places.
Selection: Havana Laff, 9/1 each-way (Bet365)
7:00 โ Come Racing For Free Novice Stakes (1m, 3yo, 13 runners)
This is the race of the night. Thirteen runners, a non-runner to subtract, and a market dominated by Penny Time at 10/11 (Coral). The Hugo Palmer runner is a dual winner including over course and distance at Dunstall Park, and the form figures of 1D1 do demand respect. Palmer is running at a decent clip with 3/12 over the last fortnight. On raw numbers, Penny Time looks like a banker. But short prices in 13-runner novices on the all-weather carry risk, and the each-way map is where the money gets interesting.
The selection here is Goldinthesea Each-Way at 3/1 (William Hill/Coral). Edward Bethell is absolutely firing right now, 6 winners from 17 runners in the last 14 days, that is a yard operating at maximum efficiency. Goldinthesea won by three lengths at Dundalk in January, making all over a mile on the all-weather, and now makes his UK stable debut after leaving Joseph O'Brien. The fact the spotlight commentary specifically says "one to note in the betting" is a meaningful flag. A horse who bolted up by three on debut and transfers to a red-hot British yard at 3/1 in a field where the market leader is barely odds-on, that is value. Each-way with three places paid at 1/5 odds makes this an excellent each-way proposition, and a straight win bet is not unreasonable either.
Keep an eye on Harmonics for the Gosden yard on debut, but 12/1 is drifty enough to suggest he's not expected to fire first time. Sassicaia at 4/1 won his debut at Wolverhampton but the form is weak and the trip may be on the short side for him.
Selection: Goldinthesea, 3/1 each-way (William Hill/Coral)
8:30 โ Summer Socials Fillies' Handicap (6f, 3yo+, 8 runners)
Eight runners, three places paid, and a race with more angles than most handicaps at this level. Seven Fires is a 5/2 market leader for Jack Channon but the yard has had a quiet 14 days at 0/8, and three-race winning streaks have a habit of ending when the market expects continuation.
The play here is Chicory Each-Way at 9/2 (Bet365/Midnite) for Ed Walker. She won a Newbury maiden on good ground, was then thrown into a Polytrack Group 3 and a Newmarket Listed race, and was unsurprisingly beaten in both. Now she drops sharply in grade for her seasonal and handicap debut at 6f on the all-weather. Walker is running at 3/13 over the last fortnight, perfectly respectable, and the spotlight commentary explicitly flags that it will be "very interesting to see how she goes in the market." That phrase is industry code for a potential market mover. A filly with form in Pattern company, dropped into a fillies' handicap off a mark of 76, is the definition of a well-handicapped horse on debut from a mark.
Barefoot Beach at 7/1 (Unibet) also makes some appeal on her handicap debut, particularly given the Hannon yard's productivity, but Chicory's class profile is the more compelling angle.
Selection: Chicory, 9/2 each-way (Bet365)
Today's NAP
Odds: 3/1 โ William Hill (others: 3/1 Coral, 5.2 Betfair Exchange)
Edward Bethell is operating at a stunning 6/17 strike rate over the last fortnight, and Goldinthesea is a horse who already showed he can win on an all-weather mile when bolting up by three lengths at Dundalk in January. The switch from Joseph O'Brien to one of British racing's form yards of the moment is a huge positive, and 3/1 against a market leader that is barely odds-on represents genuine value in a 13-runner novice. The spotlight commentary is unusually bullish for a horse at this price.
Each-Way Recommended โ 3 places at 1/5 odds
