Southwell (AW), Thursday 23 July 2026 — Tips & Selections

A midweek Southwell card on standard Fibresand, eight races, and three that genuinely repay close inspection. The key stat to carry through the afternoon: Hector Crouch goes at 23% here with an A/E of 1.11, meaning he returns above expectation at this track. When Ralph Beckett saddles him, you’re stacking two of the strongest course stats on the card. Keep that in mind as we work through the races.

With Glorious Goodwood arriving next week, many yards are sharpening their better horses for the festival rather than sending them to Southwell. That tends to mean a few interesting second-string types appear here that trainers simply want to get a run into, and the market doesn’t always read it correctly.

4:53 — Sky Sports Racing Apprentice Handicap Stakes (7f, Standard, 14 runners)

Selection: Anthropologist Each-Way — 6/1 Boyle Sports (11/2 Betfred, 11/2 LiveScore Bet)

Michael Herrington’s yard has been in decent nick, firing at 3 from 13 over the past fortnight, and Anthropologist’s form figures of 216484 tell a story worth reading properly. The horse has been placed consistently, hits the frame far more often than he wins, and in a 14-runner apprentice handicap paying four places at 1/5, that profile becomes genuinely attractive each-way.

Conor Whiteley (5) is in the saddle, a booking that suggests connections want a capable claimer but aren’t burning a senior jockey on him, which fits the each-way intent. The 7f trip on standard Fibresand is a format he’s shown he handles. At 6/1 with four places on offer, the place-only return here represents solid value in a wide-open field.

Dannick is the market leader at 9/4 for Gary & Josh Moore, who go at 17% at Southwell and have been red-hot over the past fortnight. Don’t ignore him, but the price is too short for a horse whose recent form reads -70851. Avatar Jet at 4/1 is the each-way danger if the Declan Carroll yard fires.

5:28 — Maiden Stakes Division I (7f, Standard, 13 runners)

Selection: Hulk Power — 13/8 Boyle Sports (13/8 Betfred, 13/8 LiveScore Bet)

Roger Varian wins 25% of his races at Southwell. That is a standout number. The yard doesn’t send horses here to make up the numbers, and Hulk Power is a Roger Varian three-year-old in a maiden confined to horses that have run no more than three times. Sean Bowen rides, which is an upgrade in booking terms and signals that connections want this won, not merely run in.

Burning Impact for Ralph Beckett at 9/4 is the market alternative, with Hector Crouch aboard, which is always a combination to respect here. But Varian’s track record edges it. Hulk Power has no form figures listed, meaning this is likely a first run or a debut, and Varian debuts can hit hard when the price isn’t stupid. At 13/8, this is a confident win-only play.

6:01 — Maiden Stakes Division II (7f, Standard, 13 runners)

Selection: Dovecote — 8/11 Boyle Sports (4/5 Betfred, 8/11 LiveScore Bet)

Odds-on selections are usually something to bury at the bottom of a tips piece, but Dovecote earns a mention because the angle here is unusually strong. Ralph Beckett has a 24% strike rate at Southwell with an A/E of 1.07, meaning his runners here actually outperform their market prices. Hector Crouch is aboard, and Crouch’s A/E of 1.11 at this track reinforces the same point.

The form figure of 0-2 shows the horse has been placed and is clearly finding its feet. In a confined maiden where the rest of the field contains no outstanding rival at a workable price, Beckett and Crouch combining at a course where they both genuinely hit above expectation is enough to side with the market. Andrew Balding’s Conspiracist at 9/4 with P.J. McDonald is the main threat. Balding fires at 18% here, has been busy (11 from 55 in the past fortnight), and McDonald is rarely a casual booking. Each-way on Conspiracist at 9/4 is a reasonable saver if you want a play against the jolly.

Today’s NAP

Jockey silksHulk Power — Maiden Stakes Division I (5:28, Southwell AW)
Odds: 13/8 — Boyle Sports (others: 13/8 Betfred, 13/8 LiveScore Bet)

Roger Varian’s 25% win rate at Southwell is the strongest trainer stat on the entire card, and Sean Bowen’s booking is the kind of jockey appointment that says this yard wants the race. A first-time-out or lightly-raced three-year-old from a powerful stable in a restricted maiden at a track the trainer dominates: that is a straightforward NAP. The 13/8 price is fair, not generous, but the angle is clean and the combination of trainer stats and jockey quality makes this the most confident call on the card.
