Glorious Goodwood kicks off tomorrow and all eyes will be on West Sussex, but Southwell’s all-weather card today offers some genuine betting interest for those who know where to look. Standard going on the Fibresand, eight races, and a few trainer angles worth exploiting before the flat racing world decamps to Sussex for the week.

3:00 — Prestige Safety First Aid Training Novice Stakes (1m4f)

William Haggas runs at 23% at Southwell from 333 runners, a significant sample that tells you his horses are trained to handle this track. Tom Marquand takes the ride, and the partnership is not one you want to oppose lightly in a novice contest. Rising Tiger is the market leader at 8/11 off the back of two runner-up finishes, and that form is obvious to everyone. The price reflects it. At 8/11 you are asking a lot from a twice-placed two-year-old with no win on the board. George Boughey’s Bullrider at 11/4 is the smarter play. Boughey runs at 20% at Southwell from a substantial 209-runner sample, and his yard has fired in five winners from 19 runners over the past fortnight. Billy Loughnane takes the ride, the horse has placed already on debut, and Boughey has a habit of placing his two-year-olds sharply when they have shown ability first time.

Sean Levey, who posts a 23% strike rate at Southwell with an A/E of 1.29, rides Peaberry for Tom Ward, but the yard is 0/9 in the last 14 days and that temperature check matters. Stick with Boughey and Bullrider at the each-way price.

James Tate is 0/14 in the last 14 days, which is the one note of caution, but Storm Free tops the figures in this race at 94, well clear of the field according to the ratings.
