Sunday Racing from Stratford: April 19 Tips

Stratford on good ground is a fair test, and with seven races on the card there are a few angles worth digging into. Small fields dominate the chase card, which narrows the margins for error, but the two mares' races throw up some interesting handicap puzzles. Here are the races worth your attention today.

1:58 โ€” George Wood Years Of Service Mares' Maiden Hurdle (2mยฝf)

Thirteen runners, a maiden, and the market is dominated by one horse. Hornica is the jolly at 4/5 with William Hill and William Hill, and on RPR she has the edge at 119. But Ben Pauling's yard has returned a blank 0 from 20 runners in the last 14 days. That is not a stable in form. When a yard is that cold, leaning against their short-priced favourite makes sense.

The alternative that catches the eye is Lady Kara Each-Way at 11/2 with Bet365. Richard Newland and Jamie Insole's partnership is operating at 4 from 23 over the last fortnight, which is respectable enough, and the form string of 232244 tells you this mare places consistently. In a 13-runner maiden paying three places at 1/5 odds, that consistent placed form is exactly what you want from an each-way angle. She is proven at this trip and good ground should suit a mare who has never shown any preference for soft.

Merely A Detail at 9/2 with Bet365 is also interesting. Toby Bulgin runs a tight operation and the 1/1 stat over 14 days is a small but eye-catching number. The 0-2334 form shows a horse finding her feet and that RPR of 106 is higher than several rivals above her in the market.

Selection: Lady Kara each-way at 11/2 (Bet365), 3 places at 1/5 odds

3:08 โ€” Mid Warwickshire Cleaning Supplies Mares' Handicap Hurdle (2mยฝf)

The non-runner at the top of the weights opens this up nicely. Eleven runners, three places paid, and Jamie Snowden's La Marquise looks the most interesting profile in the field.

Snowden is firing right now, 6 from 27 over the last 14 days, which is a yard-in-form stat you do not ignore. La Marquise won her hurdle debut in October 2024 and has been lightly campaigned since. Both outings this year have been solid, and the Spotlight notes she went close at Plumpton last month on good to soft ground. She steps up to good today, which can only help a mare who looked slightly held up by the ground at Plumpton. RPR of 118 makes her competitive off a mark of 161 and Gavin Sheehan is a decent booking.

At 11/2 with William Hill, Betfred, and Boyle Sports, she is not a monster price but the trainer form, the lightly-raced profile, and the step onto faster ground all point in the same direction.

Fromheretoeternity Each-Way at 9/1 with Bet365 is worth noting for each-way purposes. Jennie Candlish has sent out 4 from 19 in the last fortnight and Sean Quinlan is an accomplished jockey in these handicaps. The 325444 form looks moderate on the surface but she keeps hitting the frame and at 9/1 in a race where the top weight is out, the each-way price is attractive.

Selection: La Marquise at 11/2 (William Hill/Betfred). Each-way saver on Fromheretoeternity at 9/1 (Bet365)

4:53 โ€” Geely Leamington Spa Novices' Handicap Chase (2m1f)

Four runners. No each-way market worth exploring here. This is a small-field chase and you pick your winner or leave it alone.

Pure Carbon at 2/1 with Bet365, William Hill, and Coral is the one that makes most sense on the figures. An RPR of 133 and a TS of 123 are the highest combined numbers in the field. The form string of 21U123 shows a horse that has placed consistently and only the unseated rider mars an otherwise tidy chase record. Harry Derham's yard has been quiet at 1 from 9 over 14 days but the horse's own form is the stronger argument here, and good ground at Stratford suits a front-running type over this distance.

Park Annonciade is closely matched on an RPR of 134 and Sarah Humphrey is running at 2 from 8 in the last fortnight. James Bowen keeps the ride, which is a positive. At 9/4 with Bet365, the value is thinner, but if you want the market leader angle, Humphrey's form stat makes a case.

The Paul Nicholls yard sending out Bond Broker at 9/4 is always worth respecting, and a 7 from 41 strike rate in 14 days from Nicholls means the stable is ticking over. But an RPR of 135 with a form line of -22421 suggests a horse that gets beaten as often as not, and 9/4 in a four-runner field is not value.

Selection: Pure Carbon at 2/1 (Bet365/William Hill/Coral)

Today's NAP

La Marquise โ€” Mid Warwickshire Cleaning Supplies Mares' Handicap Hurdle
Odds: 11/2 โ€” William Hill (others: 11/2 Betfred, 11/2 Boyle Sports)

Jamie Snowden is in the form of his life at 6 from 27 over the last fortnight, and La Marquise is exactly the type of lightly-raced mare his yard brings along quietly before striking. She went very close at Plumpton last month on ground softer than ideal, the step onto good ground today should unlock a little more, and the non-runner at the head of the weights hands this field back to her. Gavin Sheehan is a jockey who knows how to press home an advantage in mares' company.
