A seven-race card at Stratford on good to firm ground, and the going suits horses with a clean jumping action and enough class to handle a track that rewards accurate fencing. Three races stand out for value purposes, and there is a genuine NAP here at a price that makes sense.

Harry Bannister’s course record is exceptional, 23% at A/E 1.51, and any ride he takes at this track deserves a second look. Jamie Snowden’s yard is also in decent form over the past 14 days, with three winners from 12 runners, and the trainer knows Stratford well.

5:50 — Julie Satterley Waving Goodbye To 49 Novices’ Hurdle (2m2½f)

Selection: Maskarvel (5/4, available across Boyle Sports, Betfred and LiveScore Bet)

This looks a straight fight between the two market principals, and on balance Maskarvel edges it. All three Irish bumper starts saw him finish in the frame, and his hurdling debut season has been encouraging throughout. The Aintree run 15 days ago, finishing a clear second over 2m1f on good ground, is a proper piece of form. The step up to 2m2½f looks fine given his pedigree, and Alastair Ralph’s yard is quiet right now, but that Aintree run speaks for itself.

Machete Beach won a weak Hereford maiden on his hurdles debut and is on a very short price to confirm that impression. He has talent, no question, but he returned from 359 days off to beat a modest field, and asking punters to take 5/4 about that profile in a novice containing a horse with three bumper placings and three solid hurdle runs is too short. Maskarvel is the stronger profile at the same price.

6:50 — Julie Satterley 50th Birthday Celebration Handicap Hurdle (2m2½f)

The angle here writes itself. All three of Juan Bermudez’s hurdle wins have come over course and distance at Stratford. This horse simply knows his way around the track. He was beaten a neck over C&D on good ground last month, then filled the same position at Aintree over 2m1f just 15 days ago. He is fit, in form, and dropping back to a track where he has a record that any trainer would kill for.

Henry Oliver’s yard has been quiet lately, but this horse does not need the yard to be firing. His form is current and his course record is the standout statistic in the race. At 2/1, this is a fair price for a course specialist in form with two recent placed runs to his name. Back him to win.

7:20 — Farmers Fresh Handicap Chase (3m3½f)

Sean Bowen rides, and while his A/E at Stratford sits at 0.92, the horse beneath him is carrying real form into this race. Esperti won his fifth chase at Ffos Las over 3m on good ground last month, then ran an excellent race in defeat at Fakenham over 3m5f, beaten only by a resurgent Tommy Beau on good ground. That run was not a flop, it was a performance. The form has worked out.

Imperial Alex is the main danger at 6/4. He ran a bold race at Ffos Las 25 days ago, beaten a neck, and the 4lb rise might not be enough to stop him. However, the concern is the marathon trip. His form has come over around 3m and the question mark over 3m3½f is legitimate. Esperti has already proven he handles extreme trips. On balance, the 2/1 about Esperti represents the value call in a competitive little field.

Yes Day Each-Way at 8/1 is a speculative interest. He arrives on a career-low mark, 11lb below his last winning handicap rating, with first-time blinkers replacing cheekpieces. The headgear switch can sharpen a horse who has gone through the motions, and if the equipment change works, he is well-treated. Small each-way play only given the uncertainty.
