Thirsk, Friday 5 June 2026: Tips and Best Bets

Light rain at Thirsk this afternoon keeps the ground at good to soft, and that matters on a card where going preferences could separate the field in almost every race. Three contests to focus on today, all with a genuine angle worth playing. With the Epsom Derby card dominating attention tomorrow, there are likely to be a few lightly-raced, unexposed types slipped into these modest grade races today before the spotlight shifts to the Downs. That suits us just fine.

1:40 Hartshead Dos Champions Restricted Maiden Stakes (Div I)

Selection: Eagle Bay (evens, Boyle Sports / Betfred)

This 3yo gelding showed genuine promise on his sole outing for Ed Walker last October, finishing third at Catterick over seven furlongs on good ground. Inexperience was a factor that day, and Harriet Bethell is a trainer with a strong record bringing on this type. The family angle matters here: the Spotlight notes Bethell has done particularly well with horses from this bloodline, which is a specific endorsement rather than a throwaway line.

Crucially, he’s well suited by good to soft, and this trip is right in his wheelhouse. Coming into a restricted maiden off a break is rarely a negative for a horse with natural ability and something to work with. At evens he’s a short price, but in a field of limited quality this is clearly the standout on form and potential. Back him to win.

Each-way note: Field of 10 with 3 places at 1/5 but at evens, win only is the play.

2:15 Hartshead Dos Champions Restricted Maiden Stakes (Div II)

Selection: Big Shot Veto (2/1, Boyle Sports / Betfred)

Three runs in, twice placed on turf, and the form reads honestly. His seasonal comeback at Catterick over seven furlongs on good ground showed he retained ability from last year, and the key question here is whether first-time headgear sparks an improvement. The Spotlight flags this openly, and it’s worth noting the headgear angle at this level often does exactly that, sharpening a horse who has shown glimpses without ever fully committing to the job.

The opposition in Division II is modest. Indefensible at 7/2 is the one most likely to give him a race, with solid efforts at Beverley on good to soft giving him a legitimate going claim. But Big Shot Veto’s RPR of 79 heads the field, he’s placed on turf, and the market has him right where he should be. At 2/1 this is fair rather than generous, but he’s the most exposed of the main contenders and the most trustworthy on the figures.

4:10 Ruby Lodge Care Home In Thirsk Handicap (1m4f)

Selection: Forever Perfect Each-Way (4/1, Boyle Sports / Betfred / LiveScore Bet)

The obvious call here is King Of Berkshire at 5/6, and Andrew Balding’s yard has a 23% strike rate at Thirsk with a positive A/E ratio, so the favourite is firmly in the picture. But at 5/6 there’s no value, and in a six-runner handicap the difference between winning and not winning is too fine to back at odds-on.

Forever Perfect is the angle. Rebecca Menzies’s filly has been in excellent form on the all-weather this spring, posting form figures of 3-1-2-2 including a career-best runner-up finish at Wolverhampton over this exact trip. The horse that beat her that day, Kakirra, has won twice since. That’s form that reads very well in this context.

The one question is turf. She needs to prove herself on grass, and the Spotlight is honest about that. But this is a sharp left-handed track, the going suits, and at 4/1 each-way with two places on offer there’s a clear value case. If the turf question is answered here, she wins or runs very close. At 5/6 the market favourite doesn’t offer that return. Take the 4/1 each-way on Forever Perfect.

Each-way terms: 2 places at 1/4 odds.

Today’s NAP

Jockey silksEagle Bay โ€” Hartshead Dos Champions Restricted Maiden Stakes Div I (1:40, Thirsk)
Odds: evens โ€” Boyle Sports (others: evens Betfred)

The standout on form and potential in a weak division. Third on debut at Catterick last October showed genuine ability; inexperience was the limiting factor. Now with Harriet Bethell, a trainer specifically noted for doing well with this family, and returning to the seven-furlong trip on ground he should appreciate. In a restricted maiden of this modest grade, a horse with a legitimate form line and the right trainer-family angle at an honest price is exactly what the NAP slot is for.
