Cameron Young's Runaway Lead Sets Up Final Round Coronation
Cameron Young has seized absolute control of the Truist Championship after 36 holes, standing at 15-under par with a six-shot cushion over the chasing pack. The American's back-to-back rounds of 64 and 67 have left the field in his wake at Quail Hollow Club, and barring a spectacular collapse, he will be extremely hard to stop in Sunday's finale.
Scottie Scheffler, Si Woo Kim, and Kristoffer Reitan share second place at 9-under, each carding identical rounds of 70-68 over the first two days. The gap to Young, however, is a chasm: nobody has closed within striking distance, and the leaderboard beyond the top four has thinned considerably in terms of genuine title contention.
Our Pre-Tournament Pick
Jordan Spieth's bid has stalled. Our pre-event selection sits at 5-under par, level with four other players and now 10 shots adrift of Young. The 2015 Masters champion stumbled in Round 2, posting a 3-over 75 after an encouraging opening 65. That puts Spieth at 14th on the leaderboard, very much in the mix for a top-10 finish but with zero realistic path to victory. A strong final round would salvage the week, but realistically his winning chances have evaporated.
Who's in Contention
Young is the story. At 0.15/1, he is a prohibitive favorite, and rightly so: a six-shot lead with 18 holes remaining is often decisive. If he posts a level-par round on Sunday, he wins the tournament. Scheffler at 6.5/1 is the only player with a mathematical chance, and even he would need Young to implode while the World No. 1 cards something special.
Si Woo Kim and Kristoffer Reitan are tournament insurance plays at 28/1 and 40/1 respectively. Both are tied second, but both would need to shoot 65 or better while praying Young shoots 75 plus. Ben Griffin and Matt McCarty, both at 8-under, sit even further back at 70/1 and 90/1. Nick Taylor rounded out the top seven at 8-under but is priced at 100/1: dead money unless something extraordinary happens.
Round 3 Betting Angles
The narrative heading into Sunday is simple: can anyone rattle Young? He's played the best golf of the week, momentum is entirely his, and the course setup at Quail Hollow should reward his ball-striking. Back Young as a straight winner at anything shorter than 0.20/1. It's disrespectful to ignore six shots in professional golf, but Young has earned his market price.
For place betting, Scheffler represents decent value at 6.5/1. He's a better player than his position suggests, he's proven he can chase on Sundays, and the World No. 1 tag matters. If Young falters even slightly, Scheffler's class could shine through. Si Woo Kim and Reitan are true lottery tickets: capable of 65s, but needing perfect conditions and Young's collapse simultaneously.
Spieth, for the record, has no realistic win probability at 14th and 10 shots back. Settle for a top-10 finish if backing him for the weekend.
Our Updated Pick
Odds: 6.5/1 โ bet365
Young is the right favorite, but at 0.15/1 he's too short for our purposes. Scheffler sits six shots back in second place, paired with the leader on Sunday, and possesses the quality to exploit any weakness. If Young's flawless golf slips by even one or two shots, the World No. 1's class should prevail. A chase round from Scheffler pays solid value.
