Wetherby, Thursday 4 June 2026: Tips and Best Bets
Wetherby on a Thursday in early June, with the Epsom Derby just two days away and most of the serious money already pointing south to Surrey. That suits us fine. Competitive handicaps, a couple of novice heats for the two-year-olds, and going that’s officially Good To Firm despite a light drizzle this morning. The ground should remain quick enough for horses that want the top of the going. Charlie Johnston and Jason Hart are both worth following at this track based on course stats, and both feature prominently today.
2:12 โ Vauxhall Knaresborough British EBF Fillies’ Restricted Novice Stakes (Div I)
Selection: Wateera (13/8, Boyle Sports / Betfred)
Karl Burke is an operator who knows exactly how to place a debutant, and this filly looks the type to hit the ground running. A 52,000 euro yearling, she is a half-sister to an AW winner and comes from a dam with a sharp French pedigree. Crucially, Burke’s yard runs at 21% with two-year-olds on turf over the last five seasons. That is a standout number. Clifford Lee takes the ride, and the market will tell us plenty in the hour before post time.
Ziggy Starshine sets the standard on form. She was impressive at Bath on debut and the market backed her again at Salisbury last time, though she found one too good. On this slightly shorter track and back against a modest field, she demands respect. But the 6/4 is short enough given she couldn’t score at Salisbury, and Burke’s unknown quantity at a yard that fires with debutants could easily overturn her here.
3:12 โ Amstel Fillies’ Novice Stakes (GBB Race)
Selection: Viviana (9/2, Boyle Sports / LiveScore Bet)
Jason Hart rides, and his 17% strike rate at Wetherby with an A/E of 1.29 is meaningful in a seven-runner field. Charlie Johnston’s yard sits at 15% course wins here too, a combination that tilts the value needle. Viviana stuck on for third on debut over 6f at Redcar on Good To Firm ground, exactly the going she faces today. The soft-ground run at Yarmouth is best ignored. Back her in her preferred conditions and the price is fair.
The market favourite Reigning Queen (5/4) brings Oisin Murphy and Andrew Balding credentials, but the price is very short for a filly who has finished second in two runs without winning. Veil Of Clouds (10/3) is an interesting unknown from Simon and Ed Crisford, a yard running at 4/20 over the last fortnight. If she is well-regarded she could go off shorter still, and a market move would make her harder to oppose. As it stands, Viviana at 9/2 with the course-form angle is the play.
4:42 โ Book Your Autumn Hospitality Packages Now Handicap (7f)
Selection: It Just Takes Time Each-Way (9/1, Boyle Sports / Betfred | 17/2 LiveScore Bet)
Sixteen runners in a 7f handicap on Good To Firm ground, and the value is most likely buried somewhere in the middle of the market. Mark Walford has sent out 3 winners from 16 runners in the last 14 days, a yard that is clearly in form. This eight-year-old gelding won at Beverley last September from 3lb higher than today’s mark. He handles all types of ground, has a prolific record at up to 7.5 furlongs, and is now back at a mark the handicapper has handed him a gift at. Jack Garritty rides.
The concern is obvious: he’s eight years old and hasn’t hit the board in his last four starts. But the drop in grade, the proven ground conditions, and a yard among the winners right now all point to a revival. At 9/1 each-way in a 16-runner field paying five places at 1/5 odds, the terms are generous.
Society Man (20/1) brings the Charlie Johnston and Cieren Fallon combination, both of whom have excellent course records at Wetherby. Johnston at 15% wins here and Fallon at 22% is a pairing worth monitoring in any race, but the form this season has been poor and the Spotlight makes no bones about it being hard to be confident. An outsider to keep in mind for the place if you’re building a forecast.
Obelix (15/2) won at York last July and is back on a handy mark. Ryan Sexton takes the ride for Julie Camacho, who has sent out 2 winners from 21 runners recently. Not firing, and the six runs without a win since York are a concern. Interest only.
Today’s NAP
Odds: 9/1 โ Boyle Sports / Betfred (others: 17/2 LiveScore Bet)
Mark Walford’s yard is firing right now, three winners from 16 runners in the past fortnight. This gelding ran off a mark 3lb higher when winning at Beverley last September, handles Good To Firm ground without issue, and comes into a 16-runner field where the handicapper has left him with a realistic shot. The age concern is real, but the conditions are right, the trainer is in form, and 9/1 in a race paying five each-way places is precisely where the value lies today.
