Wetherby, Monday 15 June 2026: Tips and Best Bets

A seven-race card at Wetherby on good ground, with cloudy skies keeping conditions consistent throughout the afternoon. The track suits horses that travel prominently and handle a fair test, and the seven-furlong trips dominating the early races should suit scopey types still learning their trade. Three races stand out for punting purposes today.

1:30 โ€” William Hill EBF Maiden Fillies’ Stakes (7f, Good)

Seven runners, two of them making their debut, and the market is dominated by a well-connected Balding filly and a K R Burke hotpot. The overlay is hiding in plain sight.

Selection: March Lilly at 9/2 (Boyle Sports, LiveScore Bet) with Tom Eaves in the saddle. Kevin Ryan’s yard has posted five winners from 33 runners over the past 14 days, which is a sharp strike rate for a string of this size. Ryan also carries a 15% course record at Wetherby with an A/E of 1.31, meaning his runners here outperform their market expectations. Crucially, Tom Eaves is the standout jockey at this track: a 16% course winner with an extraordinary A/E of 2.02. That combination, trainer firing and jockey punching above his weight at this specific track, is exactly the angle that produces value winners.

Starlight Mirage is the 10/11 favourite for K R Burke, whose 13 winners from 46 runners in 14 days confirms the yard is running hot. Respect the price, but evens in a maiden with debut runners in the field carries real risk. Wise And Wonderful (Oisin Murphy, Andrew Balding) is the 2/1 second favourite, and Balding’s 20% course record is solid, but the A/E of 0.77 suggests his Wetherby runners tend to underperform market expectations. At 9/2, March Lilly represents the value.

2:00 โ€” William Hill Novice Stakes (7f, Good)

Eleven runners for this novice, and the market has split its opinion almost exactly between two unexposed types. The angle here is straightforward.

Selection: Crossbar at 11/10 (Boyle Sports, Betfred). Clive Cox’s three-year-old gelding arrives on debut with a mark of 1, reading as a winner already, and is ridden by Callum Rodriguez who carries a 17% course record at Wetherby. Cox has four winners from 21 runners in the past 14 days, a solid 19% strike rate. The opposition is headed by Machadadorp for Andrew Balding and Oisin Murphy, also priced at 11/10, who shaped with promise on her last start (form figures 61). That race was encouraging, but as noted above, Balding’s A/E at Wetherby sits below 1.0. In a match-betting scenario at identical odds, the Cox runner with Rodriguez up carries the stronger course profile.

Rogue Invincible at 12/1 for Edward Bethell is worth a note each-way. Bethell’s A/E at Wetherby is 0.70 so the course stats don’t shout, but the yard has been ticking along and a 2/11 recent strike rate is not awful for a smaller operation. Best watched rather than backed at this stage.

3:07 โ€” Amstel Apprentice Handicap (1m, Good)

Selection: Roaring Ralph at 3/1 (Boyle Sports, Betfred) for Michael Dods and Rhys Elliott. The form figures say it all: 211121. Six recent starts, four wins, and a place in between. This horse is in the form of his life and has clearly found his level in this grade. Dods has sent out three winners from 26 runners over the past 14 days, and with Rhys Elliott taking 5lb off the handicapper, the combination looks as well-placed as the market suggests. On good ground over a mile, there is no obvious reason the winning sequence ends here.

Rajapour at 7/2 for David O’Meara is the main threat. O’Meara holds an A/E of 1.07 at Wetherby, meaning his runners perform to expectation at this track, and 782433 is decent recent form without the killer punch. Flying Fletcher (7/2) ran a 4 last time and is consistent, but the Roaring Ralph form holds more conviction at a similar price. Garden Oasis is 11 years old and on 140lbs, pass.

At 3/1, Roaring Ralph is the banker of the card.

Today’s NAP

Jockey silksRoaring Ralph โ€” Amstel Apprentice Handicap (3:07, Wetherby)
Odds: 3/1 โ€” Boyle Sports (others: 3/1 Betfred)

Four wins in his last six starts, a well-handicapped mark, and Rhys Elliott claiming 5lb to ease the burden further. Good ground at Wetherby on a mile trip is no concern for a horse running this consistently. At 3/1 you are getting a horse in the form of his life at a fair price, not a false favourite being talked up on reputation alone. Back him to win.
