A seven-race card at Windsor on good to firm ground, with a warm evening expected under partly cloudy skies. The straight six-furlong track and the sweeping home bend suit handy, prominent-racing types, and the going is exactly what you want for horses with a quick action. John and Thady Gosden lead the trainer standings here at a 32% clip, and Roger Varian is not far behind at 26%. When those yards speak, Windsor listens. Three races stand out for punters looking for genuine angles.

7:00 — Fitzdares Sprint Series Handicap (6f, 11 runners)

Selection: Regal Envoy (9/4, Boyle Sports)

This is the most straightforward-looking race on the card. Regal Envoy won here at Windsor just 21 days ago, taking a handicap off a 6lb lower mark by one and a half lengths, and he returns to the same venue in fine heart. The form line reads 3121 going back through this season, and Oisin Murphy, who has 127 winners at this track, takes the ride. Yes, he comes back up 6lb for that win, and yes, first-time cheekpieces add a small unknown, but his handler William Knight has had a quiet fortnight at 1/10 and that is the only genuine caveat. Horses do not lose their form between a Windsor win and a return to Windsor three weeks later. The going suits, the track suits, and Murphy does not take mounts at short prices for fun on a Monday evening.

Also consider: Invictus Gold (6/1) with Tom Clover saddling. Clover runs at 15% at Windsor with a positive A/E of 1.03, and Tom Marquand is booked. First-time cheekpieces and a 2-length near-miss at Epsom off a 1lb lower mark three weeks ago. Each-way interest at the price in an 11-runner field.

Selection: A Taste Of Glory (11/4, Boyle Sports)

Rated highest in the field and dropping back from a top-level 12f event that was quite clearly beyond him, A Taste Of Glory returns to a far more suitable mark and trip today. His earlier handicap success came off a 4lb lower mark than today’s, but he arrives here with Andrew Balding in crackling form at 14/68 over the last fortnight, and Oisin Murphy takes the ride. Murphy on a Balding horse at Windsor should be respected. The 10f trip is his optimum, the fast ground is fine, and the handicapper has not hammered him beyond reason. He is trading at a big enough price to be considered a genuine value proposition against a field where the main dangers either carry big question marks or are rising sharply in the weights.

Threat to watch: Twisting Physics (5/2) ran a nose second at Newbury last time and, if he gets to bowl along in front, he could be awkward to peg back. The 5lb rise is a legitimate concern, but he is the one most likely to make A Taste Of Glory work for it.

6:00 — Ronald Fletcher Baker Novice Stakes (1m3½f, 9 runners)

Selection: Tropbien Each-Way (7/4, Boyle Sports / Betfred / LiveScore Bet)

Sharp Move heads the market at 11/10 and wins a lot of these races on paper, a William Haggas-trained colt who bolted up by seven lengths at Newcastle. The seven-month absence is the one question mark, and Haggas at Windsor runs at 20% with an A/E of 0.88, meaning his runners here do not always reward at the price.

Tropbien, trained by the Gosdens, finished with genuine purpose at Sandown 16 days ago, clocking in fourth on his second start and improving substantially on debut. Gosden runs at 32% at Windsor, the best of any trainer on the course, and Murphy rides again. The step up to one mile three and a half furlongs looks exactly right for a horse who was staying on at the end of a Sandown mile on only his second career outing. At 7/4 he represents decent each-way value in a nine-runner field where the favourite carries a fitness question and the rest are largely maidens and novices with limited profiles. If the Gosden runner is fully wound up, as they tend to be at this level, he should go very close.

Murphy in the saddle for the most potent trainer at the track, a horse bred and ridden to appreciate every yard of this trip, makes this the standout selection on the card. Sharp Move needs to prove fitness after seven months off; Tropbien arrives race-ready and on the upgrade.
