A seven-race Monday evening card at Windsor kicks us off the night before Glorious Goodwood begins at the Sussex track tomorrow. The going is Good To Firm, which suits horses with a turn of foot and plenty of toe. Three races stand out from a punting perspective tonight: the opener sprint handicap, the fillies maiden, and the juvenile novice. Here are the selections worth getting stuck into.

Fourteen runners, a sprint handicap, and a horse sitting top of the ratings on 102. Willem Twee is the standout on paper and yet his price reflects nothing of the sort. The 7-year-old has finished third in each of his last two starts, showing he retains full capability, and Good To Firm is ground he handles. The 112-day absence since his last run is the headline concern here, but Denis Coakley’s runners tend to arrive ready when the trip and conditions are right, and everything else in this horse’s profile screams value at the prices.

The market is anchored around Sudden Flight (4/1), who rates 96 and has been placed three times recently including two seconds. He is a solid each-way proposition himself, but at 4/1 in a 14-runner handicap, the return on Willem Twee at triple-figure odds makes far more appeal. Hucklesbrook at 10/1 rates third-best on our figures at 94 and has run over six furlongs on Good To Firm before, but the 80-day absence and Roger Teal’s 0/11 yard form in the last fortnight kill the confidence. Willem Twee at 14/1 each-way is the play, four places at 1/5 odds.

5:50 — Restricted Maiden Fillies’ Stakes (1m2f, Windsor)

Selection: Lucy The Wire at 11/4 (Boyle Sports / LiveScore Bet)

Five runners means each-way terms are two places at 1/4, so we go win-only here. James Owen is the key angle. His yard has fired in 14 of its last 38 runners over the past fortnight, a strike rate that puts him firmly in the “yard is firing” category. He also holds a 15% Windsor course record across 39 runners, which is solid for a smaller stable. Oisin Murphy takes the ride, and Murphy’s 20% Windsor course win rate is the best of any jockey on the circuit.

The market has Sweet Horizon as favourite at 10/11 under David Egan for Tom Clover, whose yard is in fine form (5/13 in 14 days). Two runs, a second and an eighth, leave something to be desired in terms of a clear form line. Ziata (5/2) has the most experience in the field with five runs and placed efforts in there, but she has finished fifth and third most recently. Lucy The Wire at 11/4 with the combination of a hot yard, a top Windsor jockey, and a more competitive price than the favourite deserves the nod.

Harry Knows is the market leader at evens and Richard Hughes’ yard is producing (3/24 in 14 days), but Oisin Murphy’s presence in the saddle cannot mask the fact this colt has run four times and found someone better each occasion, finishing second, fourth, second and second. At evens you are backing a horse who keeps getting beaten. That is not value.

Down To You Kid at 2/1 is a more interesting proposition. Pat Dobbs is a quality rider, Richard Hannon’s yard has sent out 7 winners from 55 runs in the last fortnight, decent volume and a respectable return. Three runs in, with form of 323, this colt has been consistent and keeps running into horses who are likely better-than-average. On Good To Firm ground over six furlongs at Windsor, Hannon juveniles regularly outperform their market position on summer evenings. The 2/1 versus evens for Harry Knows represents real value.

George Boughey’s Boysofwallstreet (9/2) is interesting on debut experience, and Boughey’s 17% Windsor strike rate is worth noting, but one run reading a sixth is thin to work with at this stage.
