Six runners, maiden company, and a short field. Waterford Castle is the 4/9 jolly for George Boughey, who runs at 17% at Windsor, and Billy Loughnane takes the ride. The form shows a sequence of placed efforts without a win, but Boughey has been firing at 24% over the past fortnight with six winners from 25 runners. That yard is absolutely in form.

The main market alternative is Partying at 11/8, trained by Kevin Philippart De Foy, but the stable’s 14-day numbers are grim at 1 from 16. That’s a yard running cold, and at 11/8 you’re being asked to pay a decent price for a horse whose trainer shows no signs of striking imminently.

Waterford Castle at odds-on is not a betting proposition for most, but if you’re siding with anyone in this race it’s him, purely on trainer and jockey course form. Skip the race entirely if short-priced favourites aren’t your thing. Thatcham at 11/1 for Richard Hannon is the each-way flutter in a small field where two places are paid, but with only six runners and the place terms at 1/4, the value case is marginal at best.

Eight runners and the most competitive race on the card. The selection here is Parlando Each-Way at 7/1 with Boyle Sports and Betfred.

He won last time out, plain and simple. When a horse shows up in a handicap having won his most recent start, you need a strong reason to look elsewhere, and this field doesn’t offer one. Yes, two poor runs before that latest victory give pause for thought, but horses do go through patches, and the stable’s Ian Williams sent him out last time to win. He’s run over the mile and two trip and handles good to firm ground.

At 7/1, this is a fair price for a course-experienced winner stepping up from a victory. The concern about those two eighth-place finishes is real, but the form either side of them is creditable, and carrying 133lbs from stall five is a manageable ask.

A Major Payne is the 3/1 market leader but Michael Bell’s yard has returned just one winner from 21 runners in the past fortnight. That’s a 5% strike rate. You don’t back horses at that price when the stable is running so cold, no matter how solid the in-running form looks. Law Court at 7/2 for Richard Hannon is a live contender given Hannon’s 7 from 54 recent form, but a ninth last time out is a red flag at short odds. Auld Toon Loon at 9/2 is interesting as the top-rated runner but two poor efforts since his last win give reason for caution.

Parlando at 7/1 each-way is the value play with three places paid at 1/5 odds.
