Windsor Evening Card, Monday 17 August 2026

A compact six-race card at Windsor on good-to-firm ground, with the action kicking off in the early evening. The ground suits horses with a bit of zip, and with tomorrow’s York Ebor Festival getting underway, most trainers with serious ammunition will be pointing at the Knavesmire. That creates genuine opportunity here for handlers who know Windsor well, and the course stats are worth leaning on tonight.

5:55 โ€” Play The Matchbook Match 6 Maiden Stakes (6f, Good To Firm)

Selection: Mithaaly โ€” 8/11 Boyle Sports, Betfred and LiveScore Bet

On paper this looks like a match between Mithaaly and whoever turns up with serious debut form, and the favourite deserves respect. Two runs, two runner-up finishes: that consistency from a horse who hasn’t yet won tells you the ability is there, the finishing line just keeps arriving a fraction too soon. Billy Loughnane takes the ride, and while his Windsor strike-rate of 16% is not spectacular, the booking matters given George Boughey’s record at this track. Boughey hits at 18% winners here from 134 attempts, and with four winners from 20 runners in the past fortnight, the yard is operating near the top of its game right now.

The danger is Astralite for Harry Charlton at 13/2. Charlton is one of the sharpest operators at Windsor, posting a 24% win strike-rate at the course. A debut fifth suggests Astralite is learning, and Charlton often improves horses significantly from run one to run two. Watch the market move on him, but Mithaaly’s consistency at short odds is hard to oppose in an 11-runner maiden. Take the favourite.

6:25 โ€” Bet ยฃ20 Get ยฃ40 Nursery Handicap Stakes (5f, Good To Firm)

Selection: Magic Effort Each-Way โ€” 11/2 Boyle Sports and Betfred

Six two-year-olds over five furlongs on a quick surface, and the angle here points clearly to Magic Effort. The figures place her as the one to beat in this field, and experience over today’s trip and conditions is a genuine asset rather than filler. She won three starts back, shapes as though the ability is still there, and carries a very manageable 131lb from stall three.

The 61-day absence is the one thing that gives you pause, but Ismail Mohammed and Jose Santos are not a yard that runs horses cold without confidence. The official mark of 81 is workable, and at 11/2 with two places paid at a quarter the odds, this is a proper each-way case in a small but competitive nursery. Sky Secret (10/3) and Black Velvet Boy (5/2) are both live, but Clive Cox firing at 30% over the past fortnight may already be priced in on the Cox runner. The 11/2 available on Magic Effort represents a real edge.

6:55 โ€” Matchbook Loves Racing Handicap Stakes (6f, Good To Firm)

Selection: Under The Twilight โ€” 5/1 Boyle Sports and Betfred, 9/2 LiveScore Bet

Nine runners over six furlongs and this is where the evening gets interesting. Under The Twilight arrives on the back of a runner-up last time out and a win two starts back, so she is in form and the figures back that up. Michael Blake has a 17% strike-rate at Windsor with an A/E of 1.42, meaning he consistently delivers above market expectation at this track. The horse has experience of today’s trip and conditions, Harry Davies takes the ride from stall one, and 133lb is manageable at this level.

Ray Mon Dough (5/2) is the market leader and warrants respect, fresh from a win last time out, but 143lb off a quick turnaround of eight days is a concern. Horses carrying that weight on good-to-firm ground over six furlongs after just eight days between races can find life tough in the closing stages. Under The Twilight at twice the price, in form, with a trainer who knows how to place them at Windsor, is the each-way play. Three places at 1/5 the odds sweetens the deal considerably.

Jockey silksUnder The Twilight โ€” Matchbook Loves Racing Handicap Stakes (6:55, Windsor)
Odds: 9/2 โ€” LiveScore Bet (others: 5/1 Boyle Sports, 5/1 Betfred)

Michael Blake lands winners at Windsor at a rate the market consistently undervalues, and Under The Twilight arrives in form having finished second last time out and winning two starts ago. The top weight Ray Mon Dough carries 143lb off just eight days rest on quick ground, which is a stiff ask, while Under The Twilight has course-applicable experience, a sympathetic 133lb burden, and a trainer whose A/E of 1.42 at this venue tells you everything you need to know about his record here. Three places at a fifth the odds makes this a compelling each-way proposition at the best available 9/2.
