Wolverhampton (AW) Tips: Thursday 9 April 2026
A midweek card under the lights at Dunstall Park, and while the seven-race bill is largely modest, there are some genuine angles worth latching onto. Standard going throughout, which suits horses with proven AW form. Three races stand out for punters looking for value, and one selection looks a very strong play at a price that won't last.

A six-runner sprint handicap and two horses dominate the market for good reason. The one to be on is Gold Star Hero at 11/8 with Bet365 and William Hill.
Michael Bell's yard is in sharp form, posting 3 wins from 8 runners in the last 14 days. Gold Star Hero got the gelding job done over the winter and it showed at Chelmsford two weeks ago, where he made all over this identical 6f trip on the AW to land a gutsy win. He's only penalised 4lb for that success, which the Spotlight assessment calls fair, and he's 2-3 on the all-weather surface overall. Hector Crouch rides, who knows how to dictate on the front end. On the figures, his RPR of 97 tops this field.
The main market rival is Artagnan at 9/4, who dead-heated at Chelmsford and ran well at Southwell. He's talented but comes here off a 160-day break and that's a risk at odds-on territory. City Cyclone at 15/2 is interesting, a proven Wolverhampton winner over 7f earlier in February, but the step back to 6f on a track where he wants to bowl along suits him less.
Selection: Gold Star Hero (11/8, Bet365)
8:30 Follow @attheraces Fillies' Handicap (1m1ยฝf)
Only four runners but a genuinely competitive little contest. Siam Ruby is the play at 6/4 with Bet365, though the market makes this an extremely tight call with Naana's Crystal.
Ralph Beckett's yard is cold right now, 0 from 13 in the last 14 days, but the form of this filly speaks for itself. She went to Doncaster for her handicap debut 11 days ago and fought hard, going down behind the favourite over 1m2f on good to soft ground. She returns to the all-weather where she's already won, and critically she's been left on the same mark despite running a big race last time out. The Spotlight says she's 2lb well in, and that kind of edge in a small-field handicap is meaningful.
Naana's Crystal is the only real danger, in cracking form for Marco Botti who is running red hot at 4/12 in the last two weeks. She's unbeaten in two starts for the new yard and is stepping up in trip. Interesting, but Siam Ruby has the stronger recent form line at a track she already likes.
Selection: Siam Ruby (6/4, Bet365)
6:00 Sky Sports Racing Maiden Stakes (1m1ยฝf)
Eight runners but this is effectively a two-horse race between the market leaders. Astrological at 4/6 with William Hill and Unibet is the standout, even at a short price in a maiden.
Marco Botti's yard is firing, that 4 from 12 stat again, and this half-brother to a 1m1f winner caught the eye on debut at this exact course and distance 17 days ago. He finished second of five, was strong in the betting that day, and the Spotlight notes improvement is likely. He already has the surface form, already has the trip form, and gets the yard's top juvenile booking with Hollie Doyle in the saddle. The step forward from a debut run is the oldest story in maiden racing, and nothing else in this field can match him on form or breeding.
Zooter at 11/8 makes the frame interesting on turf form at York and Ripon, but he's making his AW debut today and the trip is uncertain. He's worth a saver each-way at the prices if you're cautious, but Astrological should have this wrapped up.
Selection: Astrological (4/6, William Hill)

Michael Bell's yard is in form and this gelding has been transformed since his wind surgery. He made all over this identical trip at Chelmsford just two weeks ago and faces only a 4lb penalty, leaving him competitively treated. The only real market danger is a horse returning from 160 days off, and in a six-runner sprint, fresh horses carry a real risk. Gold Star Hero knows how to win this type of race and Hector Crouch gives him a good chance of dictating from the front once more.
