Wolverhampton (AW) Tips: Tuesday 21 April 2026

A straightforward eight-race card under the lights at Dunstall Park, with standard going on the Polytrack throughout. Three races stand out as worth dissecting in detail. The early evening novice kicks things off with a fascinating rematch, and by the time the fillies' handicap closes out the evening, there should be at least one winner on the card worth getting stuck into.

5:00 Race And Rest Wolverhampton Holiday Inn Novice Stakes (5f, 2yo, GBB)

Only five runners, but this is a proper little novice with a clear pecking order from the Nottingham form. Final Appeal is the one to be on at evens (Bet365, William Hill).

K R Burke's colt was just touched off at Nottingham on debut 13 days ago and goes to post in cracking shape. The Nottingham run reads extremely well: he clearly knew his job, showed a professional attitude, and only just got nailed. That form is now public knowledge, which is why he heads the market, but evens on a sharp Burke two-year-old switching to the Polytrack is not a price to dismiss.

Burke's 14-day strike rate reads 8 from 38, a solid yard that fires regularly. The AW debut angle is a genuine positive here, not a negative. Many juveniles improve sharply when switched from turf to the synthetic surface, and a colt with this level of debut form will not be undone by the change.

Blackberry Bold ran third in the same Nottingham race and brings similar form credentials, but the spotlight is honest: she showed plenty of speed only to be run out of it close home. Those forcing tactics could leave her exposed again if Final Appeal gets first run. Noble Raider is an interesting debutant for Kevin Philippart De Foy, whose yard did score their first juvenile winner of the season at Wolverhampton this month, but taking on a horse with solid debut form on a first start is a risk at 5/2.

Selection: Final Appeal (evens, Bet365/William Hill)

6:00 Get Raceday Ready Handicap (5f, Flat, Standard)

A warm sprint handicap with seven runners and a genuinely compelling angle on Shalaa Asker Each-Way at 7/2 (William Hill, BresBet).

The eight-year-old gelding has been the model of consistency since winning off 53 at Chelmsford in December, posting the string 311522 since. That penultimate run was the key one: he finished runner-up over this exact course and distance without getting the clearest passage. Trainer Charlie Wallis is in decent form over the last 14 days (1/3), and Rob Hornby takes the ride. The weights have nudged up, yes, but a horse running this consistently at Wolverhampton over 5f deserves full respect.

Midnight Call is the obvious danger. Tony Carroll's mare has five course wins since November and just justified favouritism in a Class 6 over C&D on her latest outing. The concern is the 9lb hike in the weights. That is a steep ask and the handicapper has caught up with her. Carroll's yard is in fine form (5/26 last 14 days) but this is a career-high mark and the market will tell you plenty pre-race.

Diomed Spirit is 2-4 at Wolverhampton over the distance and wears cheekpieces for the first time, which sometimes sparks a response in flat-track specialists. At 8/1, worth a second look each-way if you want cover, but Shalaa Asker is the value play.

Selection: Shalaa Asker (7/2, William Hill/BresBet) each-way

7:00 Get The Inside Track Fillies' Handicap (6f, Flat, Standard)

The evening closer is the race of the night. Six fillies, some genuine form to unpick, and a short-price favourite with a compelling case.

Star Marian heads the market at 7/4 (Bet365, William Hill) and the price is fair rather than generous, but the angle is hard to dismiss. David Loughnane's three-year-old returned from a 231-day absence three weeks ago, made all to beat an odds-on favourite in a five-runner fillies' maiden over 5f here, and now steps up to 6f. Crucially, her dam won over 6f, suggesting the extra furlong will suit rather than catch her out. David Egan retains the ride, Loughnane is hitting form (2/14 last 14 days), and this is a race without genuine depth.

The case against: she is now rated 6lb higher after that win and takes on older fillies. She also has to prove the step up in trip and the return to handicap company is within her compass.

Daytona Lady is the main threat at 11/4 (Bet365). Ruth Carr's six-year-old is now rated 8lb lower than when winning over C&D back in September 2024, she ran a fair third on her seasonal return at Southwell and drops another 1lb here. A horse with a proven course win at a lower mark, now freshened up after a break, ridden by Joanna Mason. The price is workable each-way.

Filly Foden at 13/2 (Bet365) posted back-to-back wins at Southwell and Lingfield earlier in the year. She has been disappointing from higher marks since but this handicapper is cutting her some slack. From a wide draw she may need to adapt her front-running tactics. One to watch rather than back at this price.

Selection: Star Marian (7/4, Bet365/William Hill)

Today's NAP

Final Appeal โ€” Race And Rest Wolverhampton Holiday Inn Novice Stakes (5:00)
Odds: Evens โ€” Bet365 (others: Evens William Hill, 2/3 Betfair Exchange)

K R Burke's colt unlocked serious potential on his Nottingham debut 13 days ago and only just got beaten in a strong novice. The switch to Polytrack for his second start looks tailor-made, Burke's juveniles on the AW are consistently reliable, and nothing else in this five-runner field brings comparable form. Evens is a fair price for a horse who should win this.
