Wolverhampton (AW), Monday 27 April 2026 — Evening Card Preview

A seven-race Monday card at Wolverhampton under the lights. Standard going on the Polytrack, which rewards horses that handle an artificial surface well. Three races to focus on tonight, and there is genuine value to be found if you look beyond the market leaders.

6:00 — Enjoy Summer Racing At Wolverhampton Racecourse Maiden Fillies' Stakes (1m4f)

Littlecote (P J McDonald, Andrew Balding) is the clear form pick at 6/4. She has finished second twice this year, at Southwell and Kempton over comparable distances, and those efforts show consistent improvement from a filly that clearly stays this trip well on an artificial surface. Balding's yard has been firing on all cylinders, returning 6 winners from 36 runners in the past 14 days. McDonald is a canny booking for a filly needing to convert her placed form into a win. This is a weak maiden and Littlecote looks the classiest horse in the field. Back her to get the job done.

Electric Arc (Grace McEntee, George Boughey) at 7/2 is the main danger. The pedigree screams stamina: by Postponed, half-sister to the Listed-winning Novakai, dam a winner up to a mile and six. Boughey has two winners from 15 runners recently, and this yard does not send fillies to Wolverhampton on a Monday night without believing they have a shout. If she debuts with any greenness ironed out, she could make Littlecote work for it. Worth a small each-way interest.

Selection: Littlecote (6/4 Bet365)

6:30 — Country And Western Raceday Handicap (1m1½f)

This is the most competitive race on the card and the one where the value sits away from the market leader.

Lordsbridge Blu (Kieran O'Neill, S Woods) at 11/4 is the market's choice based on his course-and-distance record, including a win over this track, and a promising return to action when second over C&D four weeks ago. He looks the likely pace angle and his course form is solid. Not opposed, but the price feels tight for a horse trained by a yard that has not fired a winner in six attempts recently.

The selection is Echalar Each-Way (Luke Morris, Ian Williams) at 8/1 with Bet365. He won over this course and distance back in January off a mark 1lb higher than today, when trained by Jane Chapple-Hyam. Since joining Ian Williams the form has been quiet, but his Southwell run three weeks ago was his most encouraging effort under the new yard: a keeping-on sixth of 13 at a mile, stepping up in confidence. Today he steps back to a course he has already won on, back up to a trip that suits him, and crucially races off a career-low mark. Luke Morris knows this horse from previous rides and Williams is a competent handler of AW performers. At 8/1, this has each-way written all over it in a nine-runner handicap.

Renesmee (Kyle McHugh, Michael Keady) at 12/1 also interests. She won at Chelmsford last month off a mark 6lb lower and has placed twice since. Keady's yard has not been in form, and the 7lb claimer aboard means she will need to be good on her own merits. Worth noting for the forecast rather than a main bet.

Selection: Echalar each-way (8/1 Bet365)

7:00 — Get Raceday Ready Restricted Maiden Stakes (7f, 12 runners)

This is a Band C and D restricted maiden, which by definition filters out the well-bred unexposed types at the top end. The market has landed on two horses, and the betting will be your guide.

Vidmiyr (George Wood, Jennie Candlish) at 9/4 arrives having placed on two of his three starts for Johnny Murtagh in Ireland, including a respectable fourth at Dundalk over seven furlongs in October. He was purchased for 48,000 euros in November and has been given time to settle into the Candlish yard. The key question is whether he comes here fully tuned up on his stable debut. Candlish has two winners from 22 runners in the past 14 days, which is not a barn in scintillating form, but Vidmiyr has the form profile that stands out in this company. If he runs to his Irish figures he wins this.

Santiago Boy (Ben Sanderson, Charles Hills) is the interesting debutant at 5/1. A half-brother to Military Mission, a Group 2 winner in Australia, his pedigree is clearly a cut above what you usually see at Band C/D level. Already gelded, which suggests connections are thinking long-term rather than looking for a quick payoff. Hills' yard has been quiet recently at 1/18 in 14 days, so do not go overboard, but the market will tell you plenty about how they have him ready. Watch at the off.

Cotai Eye Joe (Silvestre De Sousa, Ivan Furtado) at 9/2 has placed twice and De Sousa is a booking that commands respect. Furtado's yard has been painfully out of form at 0/24 in the past two weeks, which is a significant concern. Pass.

Selection: Vidmiyr (9/4 Bet365, William Hill, Coral)

Today's NAP

Echalar — Country And Western Raceday Handicap (6:30, Wolverhampton)
Odds: 8/1 — Bet365 (others: 8/1 William Hill, 9.6 Betfair Exchange)

A course-and-distance winner racing off a career-low mark, showing his best form in weeks at Southwell last time and now reunited with a track he has already conquered. Ian Williams keeps horses competitive on AW surfaces and Luke Morris provides the key continuity. At 8/1 in a nine-runner handicap, the each-way case is strong and the win price represents genuine value against a Lordsbridge Blu at odds-on territory.
