Wolverhampton (AW) Tips: Monday 1 June 2026

A seven-race card at Wolverhampton under standard going on the Polytrack, with light rain forecast but unlikely to affect the surface. With the Epsom Derby just five days away, the spotlight is on the Classics, but for those of us operating at the sharp end of the all-weather game, tonight’s card offers a few genuine angles worth following.

Saeed bin Suroor leads the trainer standings here with a 31% strike rate from 341 runners, and Roger Varian and William Haggas both sit comfortably in the 20s. Keep those yards in mind throughout the card. Oisin Murphy and Edward Greatrex are the jockeys to watch, with Greatrex posting a particularly impressive A/E of 1.14 at this track.

7:30 Race And Rest At The Holiday Inn Maiden Stakes (Div I) | 1mยฝf | 11 runners

Selection: Al Qatem (11/8, Boyle Sports / LiveScore Bet)

Saeed bin Suroor sends this Lope De Vega colt for his debut, and the trainer’s 31% course win rate at Wolverhampton is simply the best figure on the card tonight. That is not background noise, that is a meaningful edge. Al Qatem is out of a Listed-placed winner who stayed a mile and a quarter to a mile and a half, including on the all-weather, so the surface and trip are both in his favour from the first day. Oisin Murphy takes the ride, a jockey who converts at 22% round here.

Hungarian sets the form standard on paper with an RPR of 84, but the Spotlight is clear that he was only third at Redcar last time at odds-on, which does not exactly inspire confidence. Hozam is an interesting newcomer from George Boughey, a yard with solid course form at 17%, and he was expensively re-sold at the breeze-ups, so keep him in mind for the places. Ramli has fair form but the drop in trip looks against him and Nick Littmoden’s recent 1-from-4 record here is not a reason to get excited.

Al Qatem at 11/8 is a fair enough price for a Suroor debutant with the right breeding for the conditions. Back him to win.

8:00 Race And Rest At The Holiday Inn Maiden Stakes (Div II) | 1mยฝf | 11 runners

Selection: King Of Earth (4/5, Boyle Sports / Betfred)

William Haggas has 21% course winners at Wolverhampton and his colt King Of Earth arrives with a genuine profile. An RPR of 87 towers over most of this field. He has placed twice at Newbury and Doncaster, with the Newbury runner-up having since won again, which upgrades that form meaningfully. Most recently he was beaten two lengths in a decent Newbury maiden on good ground, and the step onto the all-weather for this trip looks a logical move from Haggas.

Tom Marquand takes the ride, always a positive signal in a maiden. The only realistic danger is Raggaas for Simon and Ed Crisford, a 200,000 guineas yearling by St Mark’s Basilica with a very smart pedigree. The Spotlight flags him as a betting guide horse on debut, and the Crisford yard goes at 21% here too. If Raggaas opens at a big price, he is worth a small each-way interest. But King Of Earth on form shown and trainer profile looks the most reliable choice.

Marquessofanglesey could sneak into the places if stepping up in trip suits, but King Of Earth should be too strong here.

6:00 Get Raceday Ready Handicap | 7f | 12 runners

Selection: South Kensington Each-Way (11/4, Boyle Sports / Betfred)

Twelve runners in a 7f handicap and there are several credible claims, but South Kensington catches the eye most. Adam Kirby’s yard has been in solid form with 3 wins from 17 runners in the past 14 days, and this five-year-old mare has clearly thrived under her new connections. She won at Southwell recently, getting to the front quite readily, and before that finished second of 13 at Wolverhampton over about a mile. Both those runs are extremely encouraging form figures for this specific race.

Yes, she carries a 4lb penalty, but her RPR of 70 and TS of 61 sit well within the range of this competitive field. Robert Havlin rides and the mare has already shown she handles this track well.

Thapa Vc at 5/2 with Oisin Murphy is the market leader and the angle is obvious, with four C&D wins to his name and blinkers returning. He is hard to ignore. But at 5/2 the margin for error is slim, and at 8 years old, he needs things to go his way. Fistral Beach has three C&D wins including one in March, but the nose bleed at Southwell in April is a flag that needs monitoring.

Lessay goes well fresh, showed he retains his ability over C&D in May off a reduced mark, and should not be dismissed at 15/2. Reputation, at 13, won over this course and distance in November and followed up at Southwell last month. The old boy refuses to read his own age, but the 4lb rise brings him back to a tougher mark.

South Kensington each-way at 11/4 with three places at 1/4 odds looks the most rounded bet in this race.

Today’s NAP

Jockey silksKing Of Earth โ€” Race And Rest At The Holiday Inn Maiden Stakes Div II (8:00, Wolverhampton)
Odds: 4/5 โ€” Boyle Sports (others: 4/5 Betfred, 4/5 LiveScore Bet)

William Haggas sends this colt to Wolverhampton with a genuine form line behind him, an RPR of 87 that dwarfs the opposition, and placed form at Newbury and Doncaster that has been boosted since. The trainer wins at 21% at this track, Tom Marquand is booked, and the all-weather debut looks like exactly the kind of straightforward opportunity Haggas identifies for horses on the cusp of winning. The price is short, but the case for him winning here is as solid as anything on tonight’s card.
