Asuka is a four-year-old gelding who has already got his head in front, and Boughey is a trainer who knows exactly how to place horses for these GBB-qualifying novice races. The yard is operating at 17% at Wolverhampton over a large sample, and while his 14-day stats show 2/7, that’s not a cold spell you’d panic about. Billy Loughnane rides, carrying a 19% win strike rate here from 770 rides. That’s a serious book of business at this track.

Tyrant Gg (7/4, Marco Botti, Oisin Murphy) has form figures of 4-2 and is not one to dismiss, but Botti’s yard has gone 1/16 in the last fortnight, which is a cooled-down spell. Murphy’s course numbers are elite at 22% but the Botti booking looks more routine than inspired right now. Asuka at 13/8 with the Loughnane/Boughey combination is the play.

Nine runners in the first division of what looks like a race split between Masqool and the in-form First Encounter, with Stacey Racey the danger. Tony Carroll sends out Masqool (9/4, Boyle Sports) with Myla Coppins in the plate. Carroll has been busy and productive lately, posting 10/45 in the last 14 days. Coppins has a stellar A/E of 1.35 at this track, which is the standout number among all the apprentices tonight. Small sample, yes, but a mark that tells you she picks her spots well.

Masqool’s recent form reads 9-8-3-4-8-4 and those mid-card placings in classified company suggest a horse that competes honestly without always finding that extra gear. The 1m½f trip on standard Tapeta looks right. The concern is the 9/4 is short enough that the market is already aware.

Stacey Racey Each-Way at 10/3 with Boyle Sports looks the smarter play. Keiran Burke’s mare has recent form of 5-7-2-4-3, and that third last time out keeps her competitive at classified level. Georgia Dobie rides and this looks a mare who can hit the frame at a better price than the market leader. At 10/3 with three places at 1/5 odds, an each-way ticket makes plenty of sense.

Billy Loughnane rides for David Evans, whose yard has gone a cold 0/14 in the last 14 days. That stat alone is enough to put you off laying out at near-evens.

Tony Carroll comes back with Nutcracker (6/4, Boyle Sports), partnered by Rossa Ryan. The Carroll yard is firing, 7 winners from 44 runners in the last fortnight, and Rossa Ryan is the standout jockey at this track with a 20% win rate from nearly 1,000 rides and an A/E of 1.09. That’s a genuinely profitable jockey to follow here. Nutcracker’s form reads 9-7-7-3-3-2, a horse who has been finding his level and trending the right way. Three seconds and a pair of thirds in recent starts suggests he is knocking on the door and the Carroll/Ryan combination at a live price is too good to ignore.
