With the York Ebor Festival opening its doors tomorrow, the big-race crowd will have their eyes firmly on the North, but Wolverhampton has three competitive-looking races worth your attention before the week’s serious business begins. The going is standard, the track rewards pace from the front, and the stalls draw matters more than most courses. Let’s get into it.

5:10 — Cavani Style and Speed Fillies’ Handicap Stakes (7f, Standard)

So Sassy is the obvious favourite on the back of a recent win, and she deserves respect. The problem is she has finished fifth or worse in four of her other five recent outings, which makes her a short price for something so inconsistent. Ziggy’s Queen tops the ratings but has a string of fifths and sixths on her card and has yet to get her head in front. Pass on both at those prices.

Amelia’s Joy is the one to be on. A win two starts back followed by a placed effort last time out shows the form is live and current. Trainer Michael Herrington is in decent nick, two winners from seven in the last fortnight, and David Probert is a polished, experienced jockey who does well in these sorts of conditions races. She has the course-appropriate experience over seven furlongs on the Polytrack, the weight of 137lb is manageable in context, and at 8/1 the place terms alone make each-way a no-brainer in a ten-runner field. This is a horse heading into the race in form rather than trying to recapture it.

5:40 — Wolverhampton Holiday Inn Restricted Maiden Fillies’ Stakes (7f, Standard)

Take the 5/2 at Betfred if it’s available. Sir Mark Prescott is one of the most reliably productive trainers at this track, with a 21% strike rate from over 1,100 runners at Dunstall Park. That is a huge sample size and a meaningful edge. The yard is ticking over at four from 22 in the last 14 days, which is a solid enough clip for a stable that plots horses carefully.

Forest Berry has the most experience in this field, with five starts against more experienced rivals producing a sequence that includes a couple of placed efforts. In a maiden restricted to Band D fillies, that experience counts for a great deal. Luke Morris rides and knows the track well. Halcon at 2/1 is the market leader and respected on the back of a debut third, but Prescott rarely runs a horse at Wolverhampton without it being ready to go, and Forest Berry’s form reading holds up better than most in here. The extra yards of trip should suit as well.

6:10 — Cavani Sprint In Style Nursery Handicap Stakes Div I (6f, Standard)

Selection: Sydney Grace — 3/1 (Boyle Sports, Betfred, LiveScore Bet)

The 69-day absence since her last run will be the main concern for punters, and that caution is understandable. But Sydney Grace is the class act in this division. She won on her most recent start and has already shown she handles today’s six furlongs. Charlie Fellowes has had three winners from 11 runners in the last fortnight, the yard is clearly in a productive period, and Paddy Bradley keeps it simple in a race where a horse with a recent win on the board stands out clearly.

Wondervision is interesting at 11/4 given her consistent placed form, but Jack Channon has not had a winner in 10 attempts over the last two weeks and that cold spell is hard to ignore. Margaret’s Pearl tops our ratings on 85 but has three below-par efforts since her last win and has been off 44 days. Sydney Grace at 3/1 is the strongest angle in the race. If she comes out of her break ready to go, the rest need to improve to beat her.
