Worcester, Thursday 28 May 2026: Tips & Analysis

A six-race card at Worcester on good ground, with partly cloudy skies keeping conditions consistent throughout. The Severn-side track rewards front-runners and should suit horses with a good cruising speed in this weather. Three races stand out as worth your attention today, and there is one selection that looks a banker in the current market.

With the Premier League Darts final tonight at the O2, the T20 Blast in full swing, and Adam Azim stepping up in two days, it’s a busy week for punters across disciplines. But Worcester’s card deserves a proper look.

Selection: King’s Scholar (2/5, Boyle Sports)

Yes, it’s short. But this is a race where the favourite’s profile is genuinely strong rather than inflated by market confidence. King’s Scholar is trained by Olly Murphy, who strikes at 21% at Worcester from 129 runners, a genuine course handler. Sean Bowen takes the ride, and his Worcester record of 21% wins with an A/E of 1.07 puts him at the top of the jockey standings at this track. When your trainer and jockey combination both hit above-average at the course, you take notice.

The horse’s profile is straightforward. He was a useful Flat performer over middle distances, found handicaps getting away from him on the level, and has transitioned to hurdles with a textbook Olly Murphy handling job. The first-time tongue-tie worked a treat at Southwell over 2m on good ground, which is precisely what he faces today. The step forward in manner of winning matters here: he was sent forward and won comfortably rather than just getting the job done. He carries a penalty, but none of this six-runner field looks capable of turning him over on the evidence available.

Arbitration at 11/4 is the only realistic market rival. The hood today could help that pulling problem, but a single hurdle run and a tendency to overcook it in the early stages makes him a risk at a track that can expose young hurdlers quickly. King’s Scholar is the bet.

2:55 โ€” KGM Korea Genuinely Made Handicap Chase (2m7f, Good)

Selection: Sunray Shadow (13/8, Boyle Sports)

Dan Skelton saddles Sunray Shadow for Harry Skelton, and while the Skelton yard’s Worcester win rate of 17% sits below Olly Murphy’s, they are operating at 11 wins from 29 runners in the last 14 days. That’s a yard in serious form right now. The Skeltons travel with purpose, and when Harry Skelton makes the trip to Worcester, he knows the game plan before he gets in the stall.

The angle here is the handicap mark. Sunray Shadow makes his chase debut off the same rating that saw him win a 3m1f handicap hurdle at Huntingdon last week on good to firm. He hasn’t been hike-penalised into an awkward position. He’s going over fences for the first time, which is always a risk, but Skelton horses tend to be educated beforehand and the yard does not throw horses into chase debuts blind at 13/8.

Zacony Rebel Each-Way at 8/1 deserves a mention. This 11yo has won at Ludlow twice in recent weeks and has course form here. A 6lb rise makes it harder, but at 8/1 in a seven-runner chase, there is a genuine each-way case if you want the bigger price. His record of 4451-1 followed by a win tells you this horse arrives in form.

Mt Fugi Park showed real improvement in blinkers and Gina Andrews has been riding him with purpose, but top weight at 170lbs over this trip on good ground makes life harder. Court In A Storm interests at 10/3 as a jumper who should improve for this discipline, but Sunray Shadow is the call.

4:30 โ€” CopyBet Handicap Hurdle (2m, Good)

Selection: Scintillante Each-Way (5/1, Boyle Sports/Betfred)

This is the most open race on the card, and at 5/1 the each-way play is the smart move. Scintillante won twice at Worcester last summer, so this is a genuine course specialist returning to a track where he has already shown he can win. He showed signs of a return to form at Warwick last week when fourth, and this mark, while not a gift, is workable for a horse who has already broken par here. Jonathan Burke rides, and the yard of Alastair Ralph has had a quiet recent spell, but course form this strong is hard to ignore.

The market leader is Charging Thunder at 11/8 for James Owen, who hits at 18% at Worcester. Sean Bowen partners him, another positive tick. His Newmarket handicap run on the Flat at the Guineas meeting showed his ability, but he is 0-4 in handicap hurdles and the market is pricing him as if that run translates directly. It might, but 11/8 is short for a horse with questions still to answer in this discipline.

Fidendum at 9/4 made all at Market Rasen and is an interesting type entering handicap company. But the quirk of running out two races back is a concern in a field-runner scenario. Scintillante at 5/1 each-way with course form already on the board is the value play here.

Jockey silksKing’s Scholar โ€” CopyBet Daily Profit Boost Novices’ Hurdle (3:30, Worcester)
Odds: 2/5 โ€” Boyle Sports (others: 2/5 Betfred, 2/5 LiveScore Bet)

The short price is what it is, but King’s Scholar has the profile, the connections, and the going to win this without drama. Olly Murphy at 21% at Worcester, Sean Bowen at 21% at the same track, a horse that won cosily on identical going at Southwell last time out with the tongue-tie doing exactly what it was supposed to do. In a six-runner novice hurdle with nothing to threaten him on form, this is as close to a banker as Thursday’s card offers. Win only at 2/5.
