World Cup 2026 Group J Preview
Group J looks like a straight fight between Argentina and Austria for top spot, with Algeria and Jordan fighting for scraps. The defending champions are slight favourites despite Messi’s absence, but don’t sleep on the Austrians – they’ve got serious quality in midfield and could cause problems.
Argentina arrive as World Cup holders and Copa America winners. Without Messi pulling strings, they’re more reliant on their defensive shape and direct play through Lautaro Martinez. They should beat Algeria and Jordan comfortably, but Austria is a different proposition entirely. The South Americans have the experience and tournament pedigree, which counts for plenty in knockout stages. Their path is straightforward – win the group, avoid tough Round of 16 opponents.
Austria have been a consistent European side and qualified easily. They’ve got clever players in midfield and their pressing can unsettle teams that like to play out from the back. They’ll fancy their chances against Argentina if things click, especially if the South Americans have a slow start. Real threat here, and at decent odds they’re worth considering.
Algeria qualified through Africa and have decent experience, but this is a step up. They beat rivals in qualifying but won’t have the quality to trouble Argentina or Austria in a head-to-head. Jordan are making their World Cup debut and are likely to struggle. Both teams will pick up points somewhere, but realistically they’re competing for third.
Key Fixtures
The opening round on 17 June sets the tone. Argentina versus Algeria looks like a routine win for the holders – they should control possession and create chances. That same day, Austria versus Jordan will likely go the Austrians’ way. The Argentina-Austria clash on 22 June is the group decider. If Argentina win that, they’re through and top-seeded. If Austria win, everything goes to the final round.
The final fixtures on 27 June will determine placings. Simultaneous kick-offs mean no dodgy timing advantages. Argentina-Jordan and Algeria-Austria will decide the tight finishes.
Group J Betting Tips
Back Argentina to win the group at short odds – they’re the defending champions for a reason and have enough quality to grind out wins. Austria to finish second is the value play here. They’ll beat Jordan and Algeria, then either steal a draw against Argentina or push them hard in a defeat. At bigger odds, Austria could also be backed as dark horses for the group itself if you fancy an upset.
Jordan are 100-1 shots for qualification and that’s probably about right. Avoid them. Algeria are the middle ground – they might nick a win but won’t finish in the top two.
Our Call
Argentina top the group, Algeria finish second ahead of Austria. The defending champions have the experience and quality to handle pressure, and Algeria will scrap harder than Austria against Jordan and prove more resilient than expected. Austria’s quality is real, but they’ll stumble just enough in the group stages.
