World Cup 2026 Group L Betting Preview
England land in Qatar’s successor tournament with Thomas Tuchel at the helm and all the pressure that comes with it. They’re grouped with Croatia – the 2018 World Cup finalists who’ve shown they know how to grind through tournaments – plus Ghana and Panama. On paper, this looks like England’s group to lose, but there’s plenty of betting angles to unpick.
England are the obvious favourites here. They’ve got the depth, the experience, and now they’ve got a proper manager who’s won trophies at the highest level. But let’s be honest – they’ve been the obvious favourites in most World Cups under various managers and it hasn’t always gone to plan. Tuchel’s job is to get them performing when it matters, and that starts against Croatia.
Croatia remain a threat. Yes, they’re older now – some of their 2018 cohort will be pushing into their late 30s – but they’ve still got quality and tournament pedigree. They know how to win tight matches and they’ve made two World Cup finals in the last 20 years (2018 and losing the 2022 decider to Argentina). Don’t write them off despite their age.
Ghana and Panama are the other two. Ghana have been to the quarter-finals before and always turn up at World Cups with a bit of bite. Panama are the weakest link here – they qualified but they’re genuinely a step behind the other three. This is their first World Cup since 2018 and they’ll be happy just to compete.
Key Fixtures
The big one is England vs Croatia on 17 June. This is the narrative match – England’s 2018 semi-final revenge mission. Croatia knocked them out seven years prior and England will want payback. Expect this to be tight and defensive. Both teams will be feeling it out, and there’s value in backing under 2.5 goals if you fancy a cagey start to the group.
Ghana vs Panama follows on 18 June. This is where Ghana’s experience should show. They’ve been here before and know how to handle the nerves. Panama might struggle early.
The second round sees England vs Ghana on 23 June and Panama vs Croatia on 24 June. By this point, the group will be taking shape and teams will know where they stand.
Group L Betting Tips
England to top the group is the obvious play but they’re short odds-wise. Better value might be backing Croatia to finish runners-up – they’ve got the tournament mentality and even if they lose to England, they should beat Panama and Ghana.
For an each-way punt, Ghana could surprise Panama in head-to-head betting. The African experience counts in these tight groups.
Our Call
England finish top, Croatia second, Ghana third, Panama are eliminated. It’s the straightforward outcome but that’s often how these things play out. Tuchel gets his opening statement right, Croatia’s nous keeps them in it, and Panama go home with memories.
