Yarmouth, Thursday 18 June: Good To Firm Racing on the Norfolk Coast
A six-race card at Yarmouth on good to firm ground, and there are three races worth getting stuck into. The surface is ideal for horses with a decent cruising speed, and the partly cloudy conditions mean the ground should hold consistent throughout the afternoon. Yarmouth rewards course-savvy trainers and jockeys, so the local form figures carry real weight here.
Two apprentice jockeys stand out statistically at this track. Mason Paetel hits at 22% with an A/E of 1.76, and Taryn Langley runs at 24% with an A/E of 1.59. Both are live in the opener. Richard Spencer also warrants attention: 18% strike rate here with an A/E of 1.20, and his yard has gone 4/12 in the last 14 days. When Spencer’s horses fire, they tend to fire at Yarmouth.

Ten two-year-old fillies, first-time out for most, and the market has settled into a three-way contest. Dannahue heads the market at 6/4 with Charlie Appleby sending her out and Connor Planas taking the ride. Appleby wins 30% at this course overall, and Planas hits 20% with an A/E of 1.40 here. There is obvious ability in this filly if she is sent off favourite, and good to firm is exactly the surface the Godolphin juveniles tend to appreciate first time out.
The danger is Spirit Tango at 3/1, trained by Ralph Beckett who has gone 9/47 in the last 14 days. That is an outstanding recent strike rate for any yard, and Beckett’s two-year-olds regularly run to their market positions on debut. Robbie Downey is booked, and 3/1 about a Beckett filly on good to firm ground in a maiden is workable.
Faith In Florence at 4/1 for Ed Walker is worth a second look. Walker hits 19% at Yarmouth with an A/E of 1.04, and the yard has gone 5/31 in the last fortnight, so there is quiet form behind the scenes. George Downing rides, and this filly has the profile of a Yarmouth maiden winner.
Selection: Dannahue at 6/4 (Boyle Sports). Appleby and Planas, course stats for both are strong, and the market has spoken clearly.

Six runners over the minimum trip, and two horses dominate the market. Twilight Calls at 11/8 is trained by Richard Spencer, who is arguably the sharpest operator at Yarmouth with that A/E of 1.20 over 113 runners. Silvestre De Sousa is aboard, and De Sousa has ridden 89 winners at this course from 461 attempts, a 19% strike rate. The combination of a hot yard and the most experienced jockey at the venue deserves respect. His form reads 065861, with that most recent win on the board, and good to firm should suit a horse who has been freshened up.
Law Of Average at 3/1 is the each-way alternative to consider. The form reads 979-11, back-to-back wins before today, trained by Chelsea Banham who is winless in the last 14 days, which gives slight pause. But the form figures are impossible to ignore. Horses returning to winning form in handicaps can take a few attempts to be noticed by the market, and 3/1 into a six-runner sprint is reasonable.
Havana Blast at 7/4 with Betfred is interesting but the recent form of 16/023 shows inconsistency, and James Fanshawe has gone 3/22 in the last fortnight, which is below par.
Selection: Twilight Calls at 11/8 (Boyle Sports or Betfred). Spencer firing at Yarmouth, De Sousa in the saddle, recent win on the board. Odds-on would not be unreasonable.

Seven runners over a mile and two furlongs, and this is the most open race on the card. The feature angle here is Penelope Valentine at 5/2 (Boyle Sports and Betfred, or 9/4 LiveScore Bet). Mason Paetel takes the ride, and his A/E of 1.76 at this course is the best number on the jockey stats board. James Owen as trainer hits 19% at Yarmouth with an A/E of 1.18. The combination works. Form reads 4-1932, with a recent win in there, and the filly drops into a handicap where she may be ahead of her mark.
Charlie’s Choice Each-Way at 14/1 deserves a small each-way interest. Taryn Langley takes the ride and that 24% win rate with an A/E of 1.59 at Yarmouth from 17 rides is a compelling stat for a 5lb claimer. Trainer David Simcock has gone 1/10 recently, which is quiet, but at 14/1 in a seven-runner handicap, a placed return pays handsomely. Form of 132704 shows this horse is capable of hitting the frame.
Nicator at 4/1 for Kevin Philippart De Foy is a live contender. De Foy runs at 19% at Yarmouth with an A/E of 1.17, and the yard has gone 3/12 in the last fortnight. The form is limited but the trainer profile here is consistently positive.
Selection: Penelope Valentine at 9/4 (LiveScore Bet). Paetel’s course stats are outstanding, Owen knows this track, and the market price is fair for the favourite.
Today’s NAP
Odds: 11/8 โ Boyle Sports (others: 11/8 Betfred)
Richard Spencer is the most value-positive trainer at Yarmouth with an A/E of 1.20 across 113 runners at the track, and he has gone 4/12 in the last 14 days. Silvestre De Sousa, who has ridden 89 winners here, takes the ride on a horse with a recent win on its form card. Good to firm ground over five furlongs in a small field: this is exactly the scenario where short-priced Spencer runners deliver. The market agrees, and so do the stats.
